High system availability from real-time conditions monitoringSPRING HOUSE, Pa. (April 6, 2005) — The Air Products plant in Wichita, Kan., has reduced material, labor and field installation costs by installing a SIMATIC PCS 7 control system from Siemens that uses PROFIBUS for field device integration.Installed at the site’s North Plant in early 2004, this is Air Products’ largest implementation of fieldbus technology in the United States. “We are pleased with the improvements and cost reductions from the PROFIBUS installation,” said Dean Kerr, senior engineer at the Wichita Air Products plant. “The project was completed on schedule and below budget. PROFIBUS gives us the broadest choice of field devices from a large pool of name-brand suppliers. We can seamlessly integrate all of them on our network.” Air Products expects to achieve long-term benefits from the diagnostic-rich PROFIBUS devices that continually monitor their own health. The devices notify operators when they sense degradation, enabling preventive action, improved asset management and proactive maintenance practices. The Wichita implementation is seen as a demonstration of the PROFIBUS device integration which will allow Air Products to validate operating benefits and to prove the reliability of individual components and the effectiveness of a multi-vendor integrated system. The Air Products Wichita facility uses PROFIBUS devices from a diverse list of suppliers, including Endress+Hauser, Micro Motion, Emerson, Mettler-Toledo, StoneL, Relcom and Siemens, integrated into a single PCS 7 control system. For additional information, Contact Siemens or visit their web site at AG (NYSE:SI) is one of the largest global electronics and engineering companies with reported worldwide sales of $91.5 billion in fiscal 2004.
