Emerson Extends PlantWeb® Architecture to Create Industry’s First Smart Machinery Health™ Management
AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 8, 2005) -- Emerson Process Management today launched a new class of digital automation technology designed to improve plant operations and maintenance, including the prevention of unplanned shutdowns. Smart Machinery Health Management extends Emersons PlantWeb® digital plant architecture by putting predictive diagnostics into intelligent transmitters that monitor and analyze rotating equipment health and deliver actionable information to operations and maintenance personnel.Unplanned production shutdowns are expensive, costing $1 million or more per day in some industries. Industry statistics(1) point to mechanical failure as the cause of 43 percent of plant incidents. Typical process plants include 2500 machines, with 60 percent being motor-pump combinations. Emerson is addressing motor-pump machines that are essential to operations in chemical, oil and gas, refining, power, pulp & paper and other process industries.Emersons new CSI 9210 Machinery Health Transmitter is the cornerstone of Smart Machinery Health Management. The CSI 9210 is the first FOUNDATION fieldbus transmitter that diagnoses conditions including motor-pump bearing failure, coupling misalignment, motor electrical failure, pump cavitation and pump imbalance. We are excited and proud to announce this new Smart Machinery Health Management innovation. It is a clear response to our customers operations issues, and will deliver significant business benefits for users, said John Berra, president of Emerson Process Management. This launch is another major step toward enlightening plants with open, digital intelligence and predictive diagnostics. Smart Machinery Health Management powers Emersons PlantWeb architecture by delivering actionable information on rotating equipment so plant personnel can prevent production upsets before they happen.Motor-pumps are traditionally monitored only infrequently and repaired when they fail. Dramatic improvement in plant performance is enabled by CSI 9210 Machinery Health Transmitter that delivers continuous actionable information about rotating equipment health directly into plant process control systems and asset management applications. With this real-time information, plant operators are able to easily view rotating equipment status, recognize issues with machinery, and take actions to improve availability and plant performance. Emersons Smart Machinery Health Management extends the innovative PlantWeb digital plant architecture :
Rotating equipment expertise is embedded in intelligent digital field transmitters
Diagnostic information is communicated from the field devices via industry standard FOUNDATION fieldbus protocol
Operations and maintenance information is displayed in DeltaV and Ovation® process automation systems with integrated AMS Suite asset management softwareThe CSI 9210 Machinery Health Transmitter joins the CSI 4500 Machinery Health Monitor to enable management of essential and critical rotating equipment, the most typical source of failure and cost of maintenance in a plant.
