ATLANTA (March 17, 2005) – Siemens Energy & Automation reported today that it is ahead of scheduled development to expand its RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) systems offering into the UHF range by mid 2005.Siemens announced September, 2004, that a new RFID system family, for 860 to 956 megahertz frequencies (the UHF range), would be available by mid- 2005. The RFID UHF family will consist of stationary and handheld reader designs with corresponding tags for various environmental conditions. Alex Stuebler, business manager of factory automation sensors, says “Siemens is nearing the end of pilot testing a stationary reader device that complies with EPC Global and ISO/IEC 18000-6 standards. The stationary reader is suitable for the 865 to 868 Megahertz UHF bands in Europe as well as for the 902 to 928 Megahertz UHF range in North America.”Other readers, including a portable device and an extremely compact version with integrated antenna, will also be available soon. “We expect to begin shipping the stationary readers as planned by mid-2005,” Stuebler said. “Our pilot tests have shown the devices to be extremely reliable and effective in providing industrial and retail customers with hardware components to design comprehensive RFID enabled solutions for improved productivity in industrial manufacturing environments and supply chain improvement.”Equipped with a robust IP65 housing and effective in a wide range of temperatures, the stationary reader device also meets the demands of rough industrial environments, including warehouses and loading ramps. As many as four antennas in IP65, designed for UHF bands in Europe and North America, can be connected to the reader to record tags quickly and reliably even under difficult conditions. With a high reading rate, multiple tags are identified simultaneously (bulk recording), and even fast-moving tags are reliably recorded. The stationary reader is connected to PCs or SIMATIC controllers via TCP/IP or RS422 interfaces and are integrated in existing automation and IT landscapes. The stationary reader, with PC support, is put into operation, diagnosed, and efficiently integrated in higher-order IT systems via a serial RS232 interface. Siemens RFID, marketed under the Moby name, has an installed base of more than a quarter of a million reader devices worldwide over the past 20 years. Siemens RFID portfolio, the most comprehensive in the market, has been used in numerous applications in production, logistics and distribution, including automotive production, airports, security gates and parking garages. For additional information, Contact Siemens or visit their web site at www.sea.siemens.com.Siemens Energy & Automation Inc. is one of Siemens’ operating companies in the U.S. Headquartered in the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta, Ga., Siemens Energy & Automation manufactures and markets one of the world’s broadest ranges of electrical and electronic products, systems and services to industrial and construction market customers.
