ABB Introduces New Pre-engineered Drive Packages for Industrial Applications
Packaged drives with disconnects extend basic ACS550 product line, offering NEMA 12 solutions in high-horsepower modelsNEW BERLIN, Wis., December 22, 2005 . . . ABB Inc., Low Voltage Drives is introducing new Pre-engineered Packages to the industrial market, beginning with a line of packaged drives that extend the company's ACS550 general purpose drives range."Packaged Drives extend the product families we offer end users -- both solutions that are packaged, and solutions created, specifically, for an industry, application or customer," said Chris Rian, business manager for ABB's Engineered Products. "Typically, such drives incorporate control and/or power control capabilities that are more extensive than base drive units."Packaged Drives With Disconnect Options In NEMA 12The ABB ACS550-PC (Package with Circuit Breaker) and ACS550-PD (Package with Disconnect) Drives offer users high-horsepower NEMA 12 solutions, and lower-horsepower solutions with disconnect options."We are pleased, as part of a very complete drives offering to the industrial market, to bring packages that provide critical disconnect means choices to the industrial market," noted John Kelly, product line manger for ABB's Engineered Products.Compact NEMA 12 Vertical Package Saves SpaceThe ACS550-PC and ACS550-PD packages in both NEMA 1 and NEMA 12 are offered in horsepowers up to 60 HP at 480V, and 30HP at 240V. The units are extremely compact and narrow, with a smaller footprint than competitive equivalents. This benefit makes them ideal for overcrowded electrical rooms or mezzanines -- and for mounting right onto a machine or a column on the plant floor, Kelly noted.Usable Space in the Higher-horsepower PackagesIn higher-horsepower units, these new packages make it easy for end users to install additional components in the drive enclosure. In the wall mount and floor-standing enclosures into which drives above 60 HP at 480V and 30 HP at 240V are packaged, there is space for field installation of such components.Control Panel Offers Flexible Use; Easy StorageThe control panel (keypad) is mounted into the enclosure covers on all NEMA1 and NEMA 12 ACS550-Px packages. These keypads are easy to program, and provide continuous display of three parameters (in one of 14 available languages). They make parameter upload / download / storage / transfer easy. If the drive is in an area where it is frequently monitored, users can leave the keypad on the cover. Or, remove and store the keypad easily.Download and transfer of drive parameters is easy, too. Store parameters for a specific drive/application in the control panel and quickly download those parameters to a replacement drive or another drive on a similar application. Or use the keypad to monitor or program the parameters on all the ACS550 drives in a facility. An available software program makes it easy to store the parameter set-ups for all ACS550 drives on a PC.Current Limiting Fuses Are Quick; Ensure SafetyACS550-PD Packages utilize a switch with fuses as standard. And ACS550-PC units, in frame sizes R5 - R8 (75-550HP at 480V, and 50-100HP at 240V) utilize circuit breakers. Built in as standard, the fuses work in combination with the switches or breakers to limit damage and facilitate fast, easy repair, if a short circuit or ground fault develops in the input bridge. Such repair in larger horsepower drives is significantly less costly than that for replacing the unit, Kelly noted. Orders for the drive packages are now being taken, Rian said.ABB Inc., Automation Technologies, Automation Products, Low Voltage Drives, is the world's largest manufacturer of electric motors and drives. In the USA, an integrated channel of sales representatives, distributors, and system integrators allow ABB, New Berlin, Wisconsin, to supply a complete line of energy-efficient electric drives, motors and engineered drive systems to a wide range of industrial and commercial customers.
