Wickliffe, Ohio, December 20, 2005 –-ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced that BP has chosen ABB's System 800xA High Integrity to provide integrated control and safety for BP's Valhall Redevelopment project in the North Sea. ABB is already performing pre-engineering work related to safety, automation and telecommunication equipment on the new production and hotel facility on BP's Valhall oil field. This work is being done in co-operation with Wood Group. The scope of the order includes System 800xA Extended Automation for process control. It will be fully integrated with the existing ABB Advant /Master systems on the field. The order also includes System 800xA High Integrity integrated safety instrumented system (SIS). ABB's System 800xA expands traditional control systems to include any component connected with automation in one simple interface, enabling smarter and more efficient platform management. ABB's new contracts with BP are related to upgrades being made in order to extend the production from the Valhall field until the year 2050. The new production and hotel facility will be up and running in 2009. The field was discovered in 1975 and production started in 1982. ABB has already received orders for pre-engineering work, as well as optional delivery of direct current converter stations, at the Valhall field and at the onshore power converter facility at Lista. Power from shore with ABB's HVDC Light technology ensures a sustainable power supply and makes Valhall one of the most environment friendly oil fields in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. System 800xA High Integrity is a complete, scalable IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 compliant Safety Instrumented System (SIS) that spans the entire safety loop, including SIL rated AC 800M controllers, field devices, I/O modules, and field actuators. With embedded safety and control within the same architecture, System 800xA improves process availability while reducing risk to overall plant operation by providing a common high integrity system environment for production control, safety supervision, and production monitoring. This flexible architecture provides the option of combining control and safety functions within the same controller or keeping control and safety functions separate within the same system. System 800xA extends the scope of traditional control systems to include all automation functions in a single operations and engineering environment so that plants/facilities can run smarter and better at substantial cost savings. Its reach extends well beyond the realm of essential process control to production management, safety, smart instrumentation, smart drives and motor control, information management, asset optimization, simulation and documentation. System 800xA's unique engineering environment manages one set of consistent data, for single-point entry, single-point change, and re-use across the plant. System 800xA Extended Automation was chosen by Control Engineering magazine to receive an Editors' Choice Award as one of the best products introduced in 2004. ABB is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 103,000 people. Learn More
