RÖSBERG Wins Contract to Modernize DCS at Germany’s Largest Natural Gas Storage Facility

The WINGAS GmbH, Kassel recently awarded a contract to the automation specialist Rösberg Engineering GmbH from Karlsruhe for the modernization of the control system of Germany’s largest natural gas storage facility in Rehden. The contract contains the engineering, delivery and priming installation of the complete electrical equipment for PLC and DCS, the commissioning and the trial operation plus the disassembly of the old systems. The controller type S7-400 and the DCS PCS7 from SIEMENS are used. RÖSBERG is responsible for the creation of the documentation as well as for the briefing and training of the operator staff.The modernization will be realized in several job sections and will be completed in autumn 2007.The WINGAS natural gas storage facility in Rehden, south of Bremen, is the largest in Western Europe. Covering an area of eight square kilometers, it stores over four billion cubic meters of natural gas underground at a depth of 2000 meters. This is enough to supply two million households with natural gas for an entire year. The Kassel-based gas company WINGAS serves customers in Germany and Western Europe, in particular regional suppliers, municipal utilities and industrial end customers. The storage facility is connected to a WINGAS pipeline network in Germany.WINGAS GmbH is a joint venture of Wintershall (65%) and the Russian company OAO Gazprom (35%). The two partners have both been active in the gas supply industry since 1990 and now supply natural gas to public utilities, major industrial enterprises and regional gas distribution companies in Germany and other European countries via their network of pipelines that is now more than 2,000 kilometers in length. So far Wintershall and Gazprom have invested about 3 billion euros in developing the WINGAS gas pipeline system. The network links the major gas reserves in Siberia with the growing markets in Western Europe and also provides WINGAS with access to the developing European spot markets.
