Intergraph's SmartPlant® Enterprise Chosen For Design and Construction of PBMR (Pty) Ltd. Next-generation Nuclear Plant in South AfricaPlant Design and Engineering Software Integral to Development of Advanced Pebble Bed Modular Nuclear Reactor HUNTSVILLE, Ala., June 8, 2006 Intergraph Corporation today announced that Pebble Bed Modular Reactor company, PBMR (Pty) Ltd. has selected its SmartPlant Enterprise plant design and engineering solution for the development of South Africa's first pebble bed modular nuclear reactor (PBMR). The initial PBMR will be a demonstration plant located at Koeberg, near Cape Town, and will serve as a platform for local and international sales. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2007 with completion of the demonstration plant scheduled for 2011. Intergraph's SmartPlant Enterprise is playing a key role in the plant's design and licensing stage. The 3D models are being developed using SmartPlant 3D, which integrates with electrical, process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), instrumentation and all of the other engineering disciplines to control and produce the production drawings and specifications. "Intergraph's SmartPlant Enterprise is providing us with a well-structured integration to bring all the disciplines together," said Juan le Roex, power plant division software systems manager for PBMR. "It unifies the design process and provides us with an interface for the procurement and construction processes, as well as helping us manage and control data on the construction site. If you look at the return on investment over the life cycle of the project and all the time we've saved using Intergraph software, you're looking at a very large number. I estimate our savings outweigh the costs by 10 to 1," he said. PBMR plants are gas-cooled, so they don't have to be sited near water, can be built in a much shorter timeframe than traditional nuclear plants and their modular design allows for a close match of demand and supply through expansion planning. The design follows U.S. rules, standards and regulations as far as they apply to this technology to facilitate a seamless application process for building PBMRs internationally. "We are thrilled to be a part of this project," said Gerhard Sallinger, president, Intergraph's Process, Power & Marine division. "PBMR (Pty.) Ltd., is among the growing number of energy producing organizations that are recognizing the value and benefits of standardizing and integrating their design and engineering information systems with other enterprise business and operational systems through the use of SmartPlant Enterprise." "Because we're operating in an integrated design environment we've eliminated a huge amount of work duplication, data transfer and all associated configuration management," said Mr. le Roex. The bottom line for us is that I don't know how anyone can deliver a complex project like this one effectively without using SmartPlant Enterprise." In 2005, South Africa declared the PBMR project a National Strategic Project, demonstrating the importance of the PBMR development to South Africa's future.
