Invensys installing SCADA system for Santee Cooper Electrical Distribution

New system will monitor and control 56 substations and automation points, integrating a range of systems and applications FOXBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, USA - November 15, 2006 - Invensys Process Systems has been chosen by Santee Cooper to implement an InFusion-based SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system. The new system will monitor and control 56 substations and automation points located along the company's Myrtle Beach and Moncks Corner electrical distribution network in eastern South Carolina. By utilizing highly intuitive object-based concepts in the InFusion Integrated Engineering Environment and InFusion View smart symbol library, the Invensys implementation enables Santee Cooper to smoothly and rapidly deploy the database model and graphics for the new system. Employing the InFusion Application Environment, monitoring and control applications in the new system will include Power Factor Control by switching capacitor banks, to maximize the efficiency of power distribution, driving direct cost savings. The new system will also provide an Enhanced Operator Tagging Support application, for personnel safety at substations that are off-line for maintenance. The InFusion based system will also support traditional SCADA requirements. "We are very excited about the ease of use of the InFusion Application Environment, and the other InFusion enabling technologies, as we upgrade our distribution SCADA system," said Diane Bell, manager of Santee Cooper Distribution Planning and Technical Services. "The object-based implementation offers us the opportunity to make system operations improvements we would be unable to do with a more traditional SCADA platform implementation." InFusion Access will provide the communication interfaces to a wide variety of system and subsystem platforms, using Modbus, GE/Harris 5000, DNP3, and Conitel protocols. The system will integrate interfaces to the existing substation Remote Terminal Units; this will help Santee Cooper better manage and potentially avoid outages and consolidate information for future asset and distribution planning. InFusion Access will also facilitate an uplink of transmission data to Santee Cooper's corporate headquarters Energy Management System (EMS), and send data to a large network mapboard in the distribution control room. By utilizing InFusion, Santee Cooper will be able to continue using these legacy systems and applications, avoiding capital expenditure for replacements.The new SCADA project will include four operator HMI stations running InTouch for InFusion; redundant application servers; an InFusion Historian system; an engineering station for configuration, and a SuiteVoyager for InFusion web portal for convenient and secure information delivery to authorized managers.The new InFusion SCADA implementation builds on nearly twenty years of Santee Cooper experience with Invensys Process Systems. In the power generation segment of its business, Santee Cooper is an extensive Foxboro automation user, with I/A Series distributed control systems (DCS) installed at 10 generating units throughout Santee Cooper's service areas. The project is planned for installation in May 2007.
