Beckhoff PCs and TwinCAT software support Intel Core Duo

MINNEAPOLIS, May 22, 2007 – In order to push Industrial PC power and automation to new heights, Beckhoff Automation has announced its implementation of Intel Core Duo processors. As a result, TwinCAT, the dynamic automation software from Beckhoff, can now handle the most demanding machine control tasks even more efficiently. By supporting the multi-core architecture of the new Core Duo processors, TwinCAT economically enables fast and powerful automation solutions with optimized operating conditions.The range of Industrial PCs from Beckhoff already includes a number of devices with Core Duo and Core2 Duo processors. CB1051 Motherboards developed by Beckhoff are used in standard PCs such as the C6140 or C5102 types with the ATX Motherboard. Beckhoff will expand Core Duo technology to its entire IPC range during 2007, so that the following will be available with state-of-the-art processor performance: compact PCs with Slot Motherboard or 3.5-inch Motherboard, Panel PCs and DIN rail mountable Embedded PCs from the upcoming CX1030 range. Beckhoff will continue to support processors used prior to the Core Duo generation.Intel Core Duo processors feature two computation kernels in one processor case. This technology enables multitasking and improves the throughput in multithread applications. Core Duo processors offer up to 40 percent higher performance compared with conventional desktop processors. At the same time, they benefit from lower power consumption and heat generation, making Core Duo processors ideal for demanding PC-based control applications.TwinCAT, the real-time control software for machine and building automation, supports the multi-core architecture of the current Core Duo and Core2 Duo processors. TwinCAT automation software was programmed to utilize one of the computation kernels of the Core Duo processor as a “real-time kernel.” This kernel handles all control tasks, while TwinCAT makes any unused kernel CPU time available for general Windows tasks in order to highly optimize PC performance. The second computation kernel, which is not used by TwinCAT, is fully available for Windows and, therefore, offers sufficient reserve capacity even for performance-hungry user interfaces in large automation applications.Consistent utilization of multi-core technology results in a control architecture that executes automation tasks with even higher speed and reliability, indepen-dent of the processor load from other Windows programs.Beckhoff Automation provides advanced, open automation products based upon proven technologies so that customers can implement high performance control systems faster and at a lower overall cost than traditional PLC and motion control systems.
