Nuremberg, Jun 15, 2007 - The new Technology and Application Center of Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) has been officially opened with the handover of the keys to the owner. A building with a machine hall and office accommodation has been created in Erlangen, Frauenauracher Straße, within one year on an area of around 7,000 square meters for the A&D Division Motion Control Systems (MC). The new building houses machine tools and production machinery that are available for demonstrations and training courses for mechanical equipment manufacturers and end users. Siemens has invested approximately €9 million in its construction. MC Divisional Head Dr. Olaf Rathjen officially opened the building together with Erlangen's Lord Mayor, Dr. Siegfried Balleis, and the Head of Siemens Real Estate Erlangen, Manfred Hopfengärtner. "The new Technology and Application Center is an important milestone and provides fresh impetus particularly in addressing our medium-sized customers", said Dr. Olaf Rathjen, Head of the A&D MC Division. He added that along with the range of systems and solutions on offer, and a continued commitment to simulation tools, the Technology and Application Center makes a crucial contribution towards consolidating and further expanding Siemens' position as the global market leader in motion control solutions. The machine halls house machine tools as well as production machinery. Automation solutions can be tested and further developed here in cooperation with mechanical equipment manufacturers, but the machines are also used to train operators and users."It is becoming increasingly important to have the intensive cooperation not only of automation partners and mechanical equipment manufacturers, but also of users", said Rathjen. "We also regard the investments here in Erlangen as a resounding vote of confidence in Germany as a location and in German mechanical equipment manufacture." That Erlangen would be fertile ground for high-tech development and production is evidenced not least by the award of "Factory of the Year 2006" to the Equipment Manufacturing Plant Erlangen.Erlangen's Mayor Dr. Siegfried Balleis evaluated Siemens A&D's investment as a further consolidation of Erlangen's status as a technology hotspot along with the rest of the greater Nuremberg region: "The Siemens Motion Control Technology and Application Center is an important declaration of faith in Erlangen and yet another advertisement for Northern Bavaria's "Automation Valley"." Planning and implementation of the building were the responsibility of the Siemens Real Estate (SRE) company that handles the conglomerate's property interests. The five-storey office building with an annexed single-storey hall was built according to the design of Nuremberg architects Stößlein. The Siemens Automation and Drives (A&D) Group, Nuremberg, is the world's leading manufacturer in the field of automation and drives. Products supplied by A&D include standard products for the manufacturing and process industries and for the electrical installation industry as well as system solutions, for example for machine tools, and solutions for whole industries such as the automation of entire automobile factories or chemical plants. Supplementing this range of products and services, A&D also offers software for linking production and management (horizontal and vertical IT integration), as well as for optimizing production processes. A&D employs 70,600 people worldwide and in fiscal year 2006 (to September 30) earned a pre-tax profit in accordance with U.S. GAAP of €1,572 billion on sales of €12,848 billion and orders of €14,108 billion. Siemens Real Estate (SRE), Munich, handles Siemens' property interests and is one of the leading corporate realtors. The real estate wealth under SRE's management encompasses 41.8 million square meters of land and 19.7 million square meters of floor space at more than 3,000 sites worldwide. SRE has direct economic responsibility for more than half of this. SRE's services include real estate management, property development and utilization, and consulting. In fiscal year 2006 (to September 30), SRE achieved sales of €1,705 billion, with a pre-tax profit of €122 million. Learn More
