ABB provides Gearless Mill Drives to U.S. molybdenum project

Baden, March 20, 2008 – ABB has been awarded a contract valued over $13 million to provide Gearless Mill Drive (GMD) systems and related equipment for General Moly’s new Mount Hope pure molybdenum development project, located in Central Nevada, USA. General Moly is a US – based molybdenum mineral development company. The Mount Hope project is one of the world’s largest and highest grade undeveloped molybdenum projects. The deposit contains 1.3 billion pounds of proven and probable reserves. Molybdenum is a metal used as an addition to steels, irons and non-ferrous alloys to increase strength, toughness and corrosion resistance. The contract was awarded in early 2008; deliveries are scheduled to be concluded by the end of September 2009. ABB’s scope of supply includes a 13 MW Gearless Mill Drive system for a 36’ SAG (semiautogenous) mill, consisting of cycloconverter transformers, excitation transformers, E-house containing a cycloconverter drive with AC800 PEC control, motor control center ,video monitoring system as well as a harmonic filter study. ABB will also deliver two ACS6000 dual pinion low speed ball mill drive systems that include ACS6000 multi drive converters, excitation transformers, converter transformers and low speed synchronous motors. Both the SAG mill as well as the ball mill will be powered by gearless drive systems; they will benefit from the world’s most energy efficient drive solution. ABB’s gearless mill drive systems are designed and engineered from the bottom up to deliver massive capacity, superior energy efficiency, unmatched availability and global, round-the clock support. Gearless Mill Drives also lower maintenance and operation costs, as they have fewer mechanical parts in the drive train. General Moly Inc. expects production at Mount Hope to begin in the second half of 2010. Mount Hope will produce more than 38 million pounds annually in its first five years of operations.
