ABB to provide System 800xA for five hydro power sites in New Zealand

Auckland, New Zealand, May 29, 2008 – ABB was awarded a contract valued at $9.8 million from Genesis Energy to design, construct and commission a control system upgrade for five of their hydro power sites. The existing system will be replaced with ABB's System 800xA Extended Automation. For Genesis Energy, the project represents a significant ongoing investment in key renewable energy plants and will provide the ability to get even further gains in operational efficiency and reliability. ABB’s Industrial IT System 800xA will replace the existing system at five of Genesis Energy’s power stations, located in Tokaanu, Rangipo, Tuai, Piripaua and Kaitawa, New Zealand. As part of the upgrade, the system will include an ‘extended operator workplace’ with features for ergonomic flexibility to adjust to the customer's specifications and increased screen and projector adaptability.In addition to providing Genesis Energy with a better way to achieve measurable productivity, Melvin Penman, Business Manager for ABB’s Process Automation Sales team in New Zealand, says one of the major benefits of the ABB system is its capability to provide a single operations and engineering environment.The system will help monitor each of the stations' water turbines, as well as the frequency and voltage of the energy output.The comprehensive delivery also includes ABB condition monitoring and vibration analysis systems.The project will take between two to three years to complete.ABB is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact.
