VANCOUVER, BC – February 13, 2008 - Dr. Nate Kube, CTO, and Bryan Singer, VP Security Services will serve as featured speakers at the upcoming IDC Technologies - Safety Control and Instrumentation Systems Conference 2008, taking place March 12 – 13, 2008 at the Rendezvous Hotel, Singapore; and the Second Annual International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) WG 11.10 International Conference, at George Mason University, Arlington, Virginia between March 16 – 19, 2008.Presentation Details:Event: IDC Technologies – Safety Control & Instrumentation Systems Conference 2008What: A SIL Approach to Security – Testing and Validating the Security of Industrial Control Systems to Improve SafetyWhen: March 13, 2008; 2:15 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Where: Rendezvous Hotel, SingaporeWho: Dr. Nate Kube, CTO, Wurldtech Security Technologies, Inc.; Bryan Singer, CISM, CISSP, VP Security Services, Wurldtech Security Technologies, Inc.A Safety Integrity Level (SIL) is a statistical representation of the reliability of the Safety Instrumented System (SIS) when a process demand occurs. SIL’s are correlated to the probability of failure of demand (PFD), which is equivalent to the unavailability of a system at the time of a process demand. Given that the exploitation of security vulnerabilities can result in a system becoming unavailable, this paper proposes the concept of Security Assurance Levels (SALs) and demonstrates how one such level could be constructed with pass/fail criteria, measurement, device monitoring and a test bench. The paper concludes with a vulnerability taxonomy that results from the cross product of the monitor states.Presentation Details:Event: IFIP WG 11.10 International ConferenceWhat: Process Control and SCADA: Security Challenges, Solutions and Implementation Issues When: March 17, 2008; 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. ESTWhere: George Mason University, Arlington, VAWho: Bryan Singer, CISM, CISSP, Co-Chair ISA SP99, VP Security Services, Wurldtech Security Technologies, Inc.Compromising SCADA systems seems to be in the category of “so-what” these days as countless demonstrations show controllers in a network fault, taking off line, DoS, etc. Most IT and security professionals still do not understand the most dangerous part of automation - that automation drives physics. These physical actions in turn have the potential to create unsafe conditions. With limited processing power, lack of updates and patching, and general lack of security in many environments, some professionals have shrugged their shoulders and have decided to wait out the coming storm by accepting the risk, but this is a dangerous decision. Owners do not simply have to accept the risk - there are now things that can be done to prevent such failures. By discussing best practices to cyber security, this panel presentation focuses on the latest security challenges, solutions and implementation issues facing the process control, SCADA and critical infrastructure industries.Wurldtech confirms new speaking engagements and events on a regular basis.
