July 25, 2008 — Vishay Intertechnology received an order from NewPage Corporation to install a customized Rider Roll System in its mill in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia, Canada. NewPage Corporation is a leading North American producer of printing paper. Its Port Hawkesbury Mill produces supercalender and high bright newsprint paper. Vishay's customized Rider Roll System, to be delivered in the fall of 2008 to the Port Hawkesbury Mill, will use strain gage-based load cells to control the winding process of finished rolls. The system will precisely control nip force by direct measurement of forces on both sides of the machine.Vishay's Rider Roll System for winders is a force and position control system with separate controls for each side. The system is designed to maintain precise yet variable web tension in the winder as the roll diameter increases. The system also features soft "core" contact with high nip-load accuracy and dynamic force detection to prevent roll "kickouts." The Vishay system will replace an existing pressure feedback control system, which could not accommodate for machine wear. By direct measurement of nip forces through strain gage-based load cells, the Vishay Rider Roll System can compensate for friction and machine wear, thus revitalizing older machines. Vishay’s Rider Roll System will be installed on Port Hawkesbury’s paper machine number 1 winder, which produces newsprint. The winder machine, installed in 1971, has a trim width of 8.4m and a maximum speed of 2,200m/min. About NewPage CorporationHeadquartered in Miamisburg, Ohio, NewPage Corporation is the largest coated paper manufacturer in North America, based on production capacity, with $4.7 billion in pro forma net sales for the year ended December 31, 2007. The company’s product portfolio is the broadest in North America and includes coated freesheet, coated groundwood, supercalendered, newsprint and specialty papers. These papers are used for corporate collateral, commercial printing, magazines, catalogs, books, coupons, inserts, newspapers, packaging applications and direct mail advertising.NewPage owns paper mills in Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nova Scotia, and Wisconsin. These mills currently have a total annual production capacity of approximately 5.5 million tons of paper, including approximately 4.3 million tons of coated paper, approximately 920,000 tons of uncoated paper and approximately 300,000 tons of specialty paper, as well as approximately 3.2 million tons of pulp.About Vishay SystemsVishay Systems manufactures, installs, and services systems for weighing and force measurement and control. These include systems with transducers and instruments to control process weighing in food, chemical, and pharmaceutical plants; force measurement systems to control web tension in paper mills, roller force in steel mills, and cable tension in winch controls; on-board weighing systems that are installed in logging and waste-handling trucks; and special scale systems for aircraft weighing and portable truck weighing. Vishay Systems is a division of Vishay Measurements Group, which develops, manufactures, and markets components, instruments, and systems for a wide variety of test and measurement applications. These include electrical resistance strain gages for both stress analysis testing and transducer manufacturing applications, as well as strain gage instrumentation; PhotoStress coatings and instruments, which use a unique optical process to detect stress and other physical forces; and transducer products such as load cells, force transducers, and instruments. Vishay Measurements Group is part of Vishay Intertechnology.Vishay Intertechnology, Inc., a Fortune 1,000 Company listed on the NYSE (VSH), is one of the world's largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors (diodes, rectifiers, transistors, and optoelectronics and selected ICs) and passive electronic components (resistors, capacitors, inductors, sensors, and transducers). These components are used in virtually all types of electronic devices and equipment, in the industrial, computing, automotive, consumer, telecommunications, military, aerospace, and medical markets.
