June manufacturing technology consumption up 35.8%

August 9, 2010 - June U.S. manufacturing technology consumption totaled $241.47 million, according to AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology and AMTDA, the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTC program, was up 35.8% from May and up 71.1% from the total of $141.12 million reported for June 2009. With a year-to-date total of $1,207.60 million, 2010 is up 56.1% compared with 2009.These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals of actual data reported by companies participating in the USMTC program. “Typically, manufacturing technology order rates slow down in the months leading up to the International Manufacturing Technology Show – IMTS (Sept. 13-18, McCormick Place, Chicago, Ill.), the largest production technology show in the Americas,” said Douglas K. Woods, AMT president. “However, increased foreign direct investment and a doubling of orders in aerospace and construction equipment through the first half 2010 resulted in an acceleration of USMTC orders rather than the typical slow down.” The United States Manufacturing Technology Consumption (USMTC) report, jointly compiled by the two trade associations representing the production and distribution of manufacturing technology, provides regional and national U.S. consumption data of domestic and imported machine tools and related equipment. Analysis of manufacturing technology consumption provides a reliable leading economic indicator as manufacturing industries invest in capital metalworking equipment to increase capacity and improve productivity.U.S. manufacturing technology consumption is also reported on a regional basis for five geographic breakdowns of the United States. Northeast RegionWith a total of $51.45 million, June Northeast Region manufacturing technology consumption was up 52.3% when compared with May’s $33.78 million and up 90.8% when compared with June a year ago. At $210.61 million, 2010 year-to-date was 33.2% higher than the comparable figure a year ago.Southern RegionSouthern Region manufacturing technology consumption in June stood at $34.50 million, 18.5% higher than the $29.12 million total for May and 36.5% higher than the June 2009 total. With a year-to-date total of $188.98 million, 2010 was up 75.0% when compared with 2009 at the same time.Midwest RegionAt $72.80 million, Midwest Region manufacturing technology consumption in June rose 69.3% when compared with May’s $43.00 million and was 82.8% higher than last June’s total. The year-to-date total of $335.11 million was 51.4% more than the comparable figure for 2009.Central RegionJune manufacturing technology consumption in the Central Region totaled $57.15 million, up 7.1% when compared with the $53.35 million total for May and up 96.9% when compared with June a year ago. The $329.30 million 2010 year-to-date total was 85.3% higher than the total for the same period last year.Western RegionAt $25.58 million, June manufacturing technology consumption in the Western Region was up 37.5% from May’s $18.60 million and up 27.6% when compared with last June.
