September 21, 2011 - Honeywell will provide process control, quality control and process information systems – including warehouse management – for a new pulp mill in Uruguay. Located in Uruguay’s southern state of Colonia, the $1.9-billion facility will produce 1.3 million tons of plantation-based pulp annually once it becomes operational in the first half of 2013. The Montes del Plata project is expected to become the country’s largest-ever privately executed investment. It will be owned and operated by a joint-venture between Finnish pulp and paper giant Stora Enso and Chile-based Arauco, a global leader in sustainable forest products. “This mill will have a significant impact not only on the region’s pulp production capabilities, but also on the local economy. It will employ 6,000 people at the peak of the construction and 500 once in operation,” said Carlos Pastrana, project director at Montes del Plata. “It’s important that this state-of-the-art mill be outfitted with the best process and quality control systems supported by an experienced organization, and Honeywell’s track record of implementing such large-scale projects speaks for itself.” The project will incorporate several of Honeywell Process Solutions’ technologies for the process manufacturing industries, including the Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS), which will be deployed across the entire mill to tie critical subsystems together. This approach streamlines operations and gives operators the most-relevant information they need to make the best decisions in the control rooms and on the mill floor. Also included in the project scope is Honeywell’s newest quality control system (QCS), Experion MX, and Honeywell’s Process Information Management System. “Honeywell has in recent years delivered and managed several large, complex pulp mill projects globally. The Montes del Plata project once again illustrates Honeywell’s leading position in the global, mega-project automation" said Brad Garnett, Honeywell’s Projects & Automation Solutions Business Director, Pulp & Paper. “With our close co-operation with Andritz, the main EPC vendor, we will integrate the entire process and automation delivery, ensuring the start-up of the mill with full operational readiness on day one”. Experion systems simplify pulp mill operation by allowing personnel to control all critical functions on a single platform, greatly improving decision-making capability, for reduced risk and increased efficiency and reliability.
