Silicom’s Ethernet bypass technology allows for bypass of Ethernet ports on a host system after a software failure, loss of power, or upon software request.
December 8, 2011 - Silicom will supply multi-port networking bypass adapters to Advantech for its network appliance platforms. Silicom’s Ethernet bypass technology allows for bypass of the Network Mezzanine Cards' Ethernet ports on a host system or software failure, loss of power, or upon software request. In bypass mode, the connections of the Ethernet network ports are disconnected from the system and switched over to the other port to create a direct connection between the two Ethernet ports in that bypass segment. In bypass mode, all packets received from one port are transmitted to other port and vice versa. This feature enables the bypass of a failed system and provides greater availability levels for the network.
Initially, Advantech will offer six Intel NIC-based PCIe Network Mezzanine Cards (NMCs) with support for 1GbE fiber or copper bypass ports and 10GbE fiber bypass ports. “More than ever, time to market, re-usability of software across platforms and total cost of ownership are key factors for success of our OEM customers. Network Equipment Manufacturers now can seamlessly combine the benefits of our modular and field replaceable network interfaces based on NMCs and Silicom’s unique and powerful bypass implementation,” stated Peter Marek, Director x86 Solutions for Advantech’s Networks and Communications Group. “Especially, customers using Silicom NICs on other platforms can now move to Advantech’s leading edge appliances without having to invest in, spend time on, or maintain software to accommodate different bypass schemes.” Initial offerings based on Silicom technology with copper bypass include the Advantech NMC-0104 and NMC-0802 with four and eight GbE ports respectively. The NMC-0105 (SX) and NMC-0106 (LX) each provide four GbE ports configured for fiber bypass. All of the Silicom-based gigabit Ethernet products use the Intel 82580EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller. The 10 GbE solutions use the Intel 82599ES 10 Gigabit Ethernet Controller. The NMC-1002 (SR) and NMC-1003 (LR) 10 GbE NMCs offer 2 x10GbE ports with Fiber Bypass. “We are very pleased to be selected by Advantech to enhance their network interface offerings with our SETAC based bypass modules” said Shaike Orbach, President & CEO, Silicom. “Advantech joins our list of over 75 active OEM customers. Their leadership in telecom infrastructure and enterprise networking appliances strengthens our position in these rapidly growing markets.” “This new partnership with Silicom is another example of how Advantech is adding value to our network platforms,” concluded Advantech’s Marek. “We take customer orientation seriously at Advantech. By adding NMCs with Silicom bypass in addition to our own modules supporting bypass, we can make our customers’ life easier and help them stay ahead of the pack. With the introduction of our FWA-3210 network appliance, we also have extended the flexibility and modularity offered by NMCs from 2U, dual Intel Xeon platforms to 1U, single socket dual Intel Xeon platforms.” Advantech Corporation, Industrial Automation Group - Founded in 1983, the Industrial Automation Group of Advantech Corporation is a pioneer in eAutomation technology; combining connectivity, flexibility and ruggedness with today's most reliable PC-based automation technologies.
