December 4, 2012 - ABB has chosen Softing to extend the functionality of its Symphony Plus with PROFIBUS. The new S+ Control PDP800 PROFIBUS Interface is built on FPGA technology and intellectual property (IP) cores provided by Softing and does not require a dedicated ASIC. Furthermore, the IP cores from Softing are designed to achieve ABB's redundancy concept and to fulfill the stringent timing requirements of PROFIBUS DP V2.
S+ Control PDP800 PROFIBUS Interface module provides connection between the HPC800 controller and PROFIBUS DP communication channels. This allows for easy integration of intelligent devices such as smart transmitters, actuators and intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). Each device’s resident information can then be used in control strategies and higher level applications.
PDP800 PROFIBUS interface features include:
- • Supports PROFIBUS DP V0, V1, V2
- • Supports PROFIBUS PA devices through DP/PA linking device
- • Supports 1 msec time stamping of devices by PROFIBUS DP V2
- • Up to 12 Mbps rate of PROFIBUS DP link
Softing has provided the PROFIBUS master protocol stack for use on an Altera FPGA that supports the complete PROFIBUS (DP V0 to DP V2) specification. The PROFIBUS DP software design is optimized and pre-configured for use with Nios II embedded soft core processor on Altera’s FPGA families starting from Cyclone III up to Arria.
Softing's solution does not require any additional PROFIBUS-specific ASICs. Instead the PROFIBUS control logic that forms the communication hardware for the protocol software is part of Softing’s IP solution, thus overcoming legacy hardware technology like 5 volts signalling.
The solution has been designed with the specific requirements of process automation applications in mind. Network configuration and parameterization may be changed incrementally without the need to shut down the entire application. The system redundancy architecture allows for uninterrupted switchover of the controlled network from the active master to its backup and vice versa. Furthermore, optional line redundancy is provided by the IP core’s bus control logic.
