February 18, 2014 - A team from Walker Career Center in Indianapolis has won a trip to Hanover, Germany, in Phoenix Contact’s Nanoline Contest. The company announced the winner on Saturday, February 15, to kick off its National Engineers Week celebration. The team designed and built the “RoboDose Medical Pill Dispenser.” The automated medical device runs on Phoenix Contact’s Nanoline Controller and uses the intuitive flowchart-based nanoNavigator software to control the application. Team members Brian Wyatt, Jon Owens, Emma Griffith, Jaidy Hernandez and Portia Jefferson, along with advisor Jim Hanson, will travel to Hanover, Germany, this April. Their winning project will be on display at the TectoYou Hall at Hanover Fair (Hannover Messe). Hanover Fair is the world’s largest industrial tradeshow, and TectoYou is a special hall dedicated to inspiring young people to consider careers in engineering.   The six teams that competed on Saturday were selected from regional competitions held in Pennsylvania and Indiana on February 1. In addition to the grand prize, teams were also honored for excellence in the following categories:

  • Excellence in Application: Benton Central High School (Benton, Ind.) for the Wolfpack Feeder
  • Excellence in Teamwork and Excellence in Concept: Cumberland Perry Area Vocational Technical School (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) for the BattleBot Arena
  • Excellence in Communication: Walker Career Center, Indianapolis, for the RoboDose Medical Pill Dispenser

Jack Nehlig, president of Phoenix Contact in the U.S., stated, “It’s great to see the growth of the Nanoline contest! Having over 15 schools and 100 high school students compete this year is awesome! Our partnerships with Elizabethtown College and Purdue University have really helped grow this contest, and helped Phoenix Contact expose more kids to STEM and manufacturing! Congrats to all!” The contest is part of Phoenix Contact’s National Engineers Week celebration. National Engineers Week (Feb. 16-22) recognizes engineers for their contributions to society and also serves as a catalyst for outreach. Phoenix Contact will recognize its engineer employees at awards dinners in Pennsylvania and Michigan. In addition, several engineer employees will share their love of engineering by teaching sixth-grade science class at nearby Middletown Area Middle School from February 18-21.
