November 17, 2014 - The meat industry in China is growing rapidly with a clear trend toward increased food safety. WH Group, China’s market leader for meat and pork products, invested in hygienically designed bench scales to stay ahead of competition and to further enhance food safety in its production facilities. More than a quarter of all the meat produced worldwide is now eaten in China, and the country’s 1.35 billion people are hungry for more. In 1978, China’s meat consumption of 8 million tons was one-third the U.S. consumption of 24 million tons. By 1992, China had overtaken the United States as the world’s leading meat consumer. Consumers are demanding safe food, and to remain competitive, food producers must comply and invest accordingly. One of the largest players in China’s meat industry is WH Group Limited, the former Shuanghui Group. It started in 1969 in the province Henan and grew to become China’s largest meat producer. With its acquisition of Smithfield Foods in 2013, the group has not only become the world’s largest pork producer, but it also acquired additional expertise to further increase food safety. The company says it is committed to food safety and consequently invests in production processes and equipment that can enhance the safety level of food production. For that reason, the company has worked for years with METTLER TOLEDO to constantly increase the hygiene level of weighing equipment to meet food-safety requirements. In its recently built factories in Wuhu, WH Group Limited combines slaughtering, cutting and portioning for their cooked products (e.g. sausages) together in one place. The company installed more than 35 manual ICS9 checkweighing scales. These scales are specifically developed for wet and harsh conditions in the meat industry. To ensure safe food, equipment used for food processing must be designed and installed according to sound sanitary design principles. The ICS food scale family is built according to the latest international hygienic guidelines. The open stainless-steel construction minimizes contamination traps and provides easy access to the platform and the terminal. It allows the WH Group to install the scales in their hygienically sensitive areas and perform their cleaning procedures faster and with increased efficiency.
