The company introduced an IP-based remote maintenance system for their products that ensures a high degree of IT security by using encrypted VPN connections and cellular radio routers.
September 25, 2014 - Wolffkran is a manufacturer of tower cranes for sale and for hire with headquarters in Switzerland and production facilities in Heilbronn and Luckau, Germany. The company recently introduced an IP-based remote maintenance system for their products that ensures a high degree of IT security by using encrypted VPN connections. INSYS icom’s MoRoS HSPA industrial-grade cellular radio routers and the INSYS Connectivity Service are key modules for automated connection control in the new remote maintenance concept. The crane manufacturer made this decision since the previous GPS-based system, which had been in use since 2002, no longer fulfilled all technical requirements, and worldwide availability could no longer be guaranteed. Goals for the next solution were independence from special providers, a higher data transfer rate, easy retrofitting, and an efficient encryption method.
Deltalogic Automatisierungstechnik GmbH was tasked with the implementation of the project. The automation expert, manufacturer of innovative hardware and software components, and long-established INSYS icom partner also delivers communication adapters to Wolffkran – these make the operating and error data from Simatic S7-300 controllers in the cranes available for the proprietary helpdesk software WolffLink.
In Deltalogic’s new remote maintenance concept, the crane controller independently logs into the central Wolffkran server via SMS. If required, the server then prompts the cellular radio router MoRoS HSPA via SMS to establish an encrypted VPN tunnel that enables Wolffkran service staff to access all relevant error, status, and connection data from the S7-300 controller. Deltalogic’s communication and programming adapter ACCON-NetLink-PRO compact which is installed between the MoRoS HSPA and the S7-300 ensures smooth communication between the TCP/IP world and the proprietary Siemens interface MPI.
The SIM cards for the MoRoS industrial routers are provided by telecommunications provider Telefónica, who cooperates with INSYS icom and Deltalogic in the “Excellence in M2M” network which offers comprehensive solutions for the field of industrial data communication.
“With the smart business solutions, our customers can operate their internal and external processes and complete applications much more efficiently and at much lower costs”, says Kai Brasche, Vice President Digital M2M at Telefónica Germany. “Costly or time-consuming IT projects are no longer necessary.” In order to install and operate the VPN connections, Wolffkran uses the INSYS Connectivity Service which INSYS icom provides via the portal https://connectivity.insys-icom.de. This central VPN network service enables users to quickly, easily, and cost-efficiently establish VPN networks without any special skills or technical requirements. Logged-in users merely need to create the desired devices – the VPN configuration and the system-generated certificates are then downloaded automatically. MoRoS industrial routers are configured automatically, but users can also employ devices from other manufacturers.
“We have found the solution for our high demands: MoRoS cellular radio routers offer a wide range of functions and can be easily configured which saves valuable time”, says Andreas Wagner, Head of Electrical Engineering at Wolffkran in Heilbronn. “Additionally, the routers offer important options that we will need for future services. Therefore, we now equip all our cranes with INSYS icom’s MoRoS HSPA.” Recently introduced at this year’s Baumaschinen-Messe exhibition in Bern, Switzerland, the new crane WOLFF 5014 city is one of the first models equipped with the IP-based VPN remote maintenance solution.
