Research by Salesleads, a company that tracks industrial companies that are planning construction, expansion, or relocation projects in North America, 435 new projects are in the works as of February 2020, an activity increase of 1% from the previous month. The list is broken down by project type, representing the areas where the need for skilled and certified automation professionals may be highest.   
While 29 plant closings are being tracked, the firm also identified 191 new construction projects, 110 new expansion projects and 145 renovations/equipment upgrade projects. Project types include:
  • Manufacturing Facilities - 137 New Projects
  • Processing Facilities - 120 New Projects
  • Distribution and Industrial Warehouse - 168 New Projects
  • Power/Energy/Oil and Gas - 15 New Projects
  • Laboratory Facilities - 29 New Projects
  • Mine - 1 New Project
  • Terminal - 2 New Projects
  • Pipeline - 0 New Projects
The top 10 states for planned industrial construction projects, in descending order, include: Texas, California, New York, Ohio, Florida, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Illinois, North Carolina and Michigan.
During the month of February, our research team identified 22 new General Industrial facility construction projects with an estimated value of $100 million or more. The largest project is owned by Ciner Wyoming, LLC., who is planning to invest $426 million for an expansion of its processing facility in GREEN RIVER, WY. They are currently seeking approval for the project. Construction is expected to start in early Fall 2020. Others include:

Virginia: Electric utility company is planning to invest $330 million for the construction of a 120MW solar processing farm in ARLINGTON COUNTY, VA. They have recently received approval for the project. Completion is slated for 2022.

South Carolina: Steel company is planning to invest $300 million for an expansion and equipment upgrades on their manufacturing facility in HUGER, SC. They have recently received approval for the project.

Alberta, Canada: Chemical company is planning to invest $200 million for an expansion and equipment upgrades of their processing facility in FORT SASKATCHEWAN, AB. Completion is slated for Summer 2021.

New Mexico: Electric utility service provider is planning to invest $200 million for the construction of a 200MW solar processing farm in PREWITT, NM.

Washington: Aerospace technology company is planning to invest $145 million for the expansion of their manufacturing facility in SPOKANE, WA by 75,000 sf. Construction is expected to start in 2021.

Iowa: Pet food mfr. is planning to invest $140 million for an expansion and equipment upgrades on their processing facility in CLINTON, IA. They have recently received approval for the project.

Indiana: Automobile mfr. is planning to invest $158 million for an expansion and equipment upgrades of their warehouse and manufacturing facility in LAFAYETTE, IN. Construction is expected to start in Summer 2020.

North Carolina: Biotechnology company is planning to invest $109 million for the renovation and equipment upgrades of a recently acquired processing facility in SANFORD, NC. They have recently received approval for the project. Learn More
