ABB announces ACS880 industrial drives

April 23, 2012 – ABB’s new ACS880 industrial drives are easily adaptable to suit different customer needs and integrate into various industry solutions. The drives are part of ABB’s new all-compatible drives portfolio that simplifies customer operation, optimizes energy efficiency and maximizes output. The new ACS880 industrial drives are compatible with virtually all types of processes, automation systems, user groups and business requirements. The cabinet-built single drives, multidrives and drive modules are compact and custom-designed drive series that require less space and are easy to install and connect. Common features for the ACS880 drives include a new intuitive and easy-to-use control panel with a USB connection. Direct torque control (DTC) enables all motor types to be used from AC induction to permanent magnet motors. Integrated safety features include safe torque-off (STO) with extended safety functions available as options via a safety functions module. A free version of the Drive composer PC tool supports basic start-up and maintenance, while the professional version is available for more advanced drive configuration and monitoring. Communication capabilities include a wide range of fieldbus adapters and a built-in drive-to-drive link for fast master-follower control systems. The built-in energy calculators provide useful information such as used and saved kWh and MWh, CO2 reduction and money saved. Customer tailored cabinet-built single drives The new compact ACS880 cabinet-built single drives are tailored to customer needs. These drives are compatible with industries such as oil and gas, mining, metals, chemicals, cement, and power plants. These drives can be customized to applications such as extruders, winches, conveyors, mixers, compressors, pumps and fans. The drives are available with a power range from 45 to 250 kW and a voltage range from 380 to 500 V AC, with 690 V AC available later. Enclosure classes extend from IP21 as standard to IP22, with IP42 and IP54 available as options. Space-saving compact multidrives The new compact ACS880 multidrives come with a common DC bus arrangement, enabling single power entry for several drives. The energy circulating over the common DC bus results in energy and cost savings, as not all energy is taken from the supply network allowing the supply unit in the drive to have smaller dimensions. A single power line connection and a common supply unit reduces the need for cabling and floor space, saving investment and maintenance costs. The multidrives serve a wide range of industries including metals, pulp and paper, oil and gas, mining, harbors, offshore, marine and power plants. The multidrives are always tailored to the customer’s specifications and can be customized to applications such as paper machines, rolling mills, cranes, drilling, processing lines, roller tables, winches, winders, and conveyers. The multidrives are available with a power range from 1.5 to 250 kW and voltage range from 380 to 500 V AC, with up to 6000 kW and 690 V AC available later. Enclosure classes extend from IP21 as standard to IP22, with IP42 and IP54 available as options. Drive modules for easy cabinet assembly The new ACS880 drive modules simplify cabinet assembly for machine builders, system integrators and panel builders in industries such as mining, material handling, textiles, pulp and paper, automotive, food and beverage, power, water and waste water. Supported applications include cranes, profile and flat rolling, conveyors, winches, test benches, processing lines, paper machines, pumps and fans. Along with a wide selection of electrical and mechanical kit accessories and documentation to support the cabinet installation, the modules come with everything that is required for a complete common DC configuration. The drive modules are available with a power range from 1.5 to 250 kW and voltage range from 380 to 500 V AC, with 690 V AC available later.
