Sensor Products upgrades Sigma-Nip nip roller tool

August 17, 2011 – Sensor Products announces Sigma-Nip version 2.2 of its nip roller analysis tool. Upon the application of force at the closing of the nip this portable sensor and software system reveals the precise level of pressure and where the pressure is occurring. This enables the user to instantaneously determine whether the rollers are aligned properly and are squeezing together sufficiently. Operators can then use the images and data of actual nip condition provided to more easily calculate the precise adjustment of roller pressure needed for uniformity and alignment. Sigma-Nip is being used by clients such as Metso Paper worldwide for routine maintenance as well as the set up of rollers. An evenly loaded roller set will extend blanket life as well as increase web control and throughput quality. Sigma-Nip version 2.2 operates in higher moisture, heat 0 – 300° F (-17.7 to 149° C) and pressure environments 40 – 10,000 PSI (2.8 – 703 kg/cm2) to make it potentially applicable to virtually all nip applications in the pulp & paper industry (including calendaring), as well as in the printing and converting industries. New electronic hardware has been introduced including new sensor and casing materials to enable the sensor carrier chain to endure repeated use in demanding environments and routine exposure to heat, grease, liquids and inks. The nip profiling system’s diagnostic software updates in real time as pressure adjustments to the rollers are made. The software is so intuitive and user friendly that within minutes even an inexperienced user can benefit from its reports Nip profiles can be viewed in several software formats that provide detailed information about nip condition. Sigma-Nip is available in two versions –standard Sigma-Nip and Mini Sigma-Nip, which is designed for rollers with smaller circumferences or larger hard roller sets which have small contact areas. The systems may be specified in face lengths 35” to 443” (90 cm to 1,125cm), nip widths 0.15 in. (0.38 cm) to 9 in. (22.9 cm). The same sensor chain can handle a wide variety of nip widths.
