POSITAL enhances OPTOCODE encoders

June 1, 2011 - The revised versions of POSITAL's OPTOCODE encoders with an SSI interface have several new features, including the support of additional output drivers for incremental signals (RS422/TTL and Push-Pull/HTL), a resolution of 1,024, 2,048, 4,096, 8,192 or 16,384 PPR per output, a reference impulse and an extended voltage range covering 4.5...30 V DC. Moreover, additional diagnostic functions can be implemented via an alarm bit, e.g. self-diagnosis of the Opto-ASIC and hardware/software monitoring. The encoders are especially suited for use in wind power applications, where both the absolute position value of the rotor and rotor speed must be determined. This is enabled by the optional output of incremental signals in addition to the synchronous-serial RS422 signal. The encoders retain proven features of their predecessor models, such as the integrated preset function which allows users to assign a preset value to the current position of the shaft. This function is activated by switching the signal level on a pin in the encoder connector. A version with a hardware preset push-button which also features two integrated LEDs for easy status and error diag-nosis is optionally available. Moreover, the synchronous-serial interface enables users to operate up to 10 encoders on one data line. The encoders are based on a single turn sensor with a highly integrated Opto-ASIC which provides a resolution of 16 bit per revolution. Additionally, a maximum of 16.384 revolutions (14 bit) can be registered in multi-turn mode. Available as solid, hollow and hub shaft versions, the units can be fitted with a connector or a cable exit. They provide a maximum transfer rate of 2 MHz and ensure cycle times below 25 µs. On the housing side, the encoders provide IP65 protection (IP64 on the shaft side, up to IP66 with an optional shaft seal) and are therefore suited for use in rugged industrial environments.
