March 7, 2011 - Siemens Industry, Inc. introduces the SITRANS VP300 which incorporates the 2007 Nobel Prize winning, GMR effect. The giant magneto resistance technology is used for non-contact position sensing of a linear or rotary valve shaft. This eliminates any mechanical wear or complex interaction of couplings and levers between these components. The Sitrans VP300 only requires a single magnet for strokes up to 150 mm (5.9”) or rotary angles up to 120 degrees. The Sitrans VP300 intelligent valve positioner also features SIL-certified partial stroke testing (PST). The rugged SITRANS VP300 intelligent electro-pneumatic positioner for linear and rotary actuators PST function ensures that emergency shutdown valves are movable during an emergency. The vibration-resistant positioner features an aluminum housing with high IP66/NEMA 4X protection. Suitable for -40 to +85 degree Celsius applications, the new positioner reliably operates in damp air that may be contaminated with oil or particles. This rugged construction and a user selectable “Fail-Last” position upon loss of control signal or air supply makes the VP300 suitable for virtually every process industry application, including power generation, chemical, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, water and wastewater, mining and oil and gas. Other features of the VP300 include Iso-Loc (patent pending) mounting technology that allows technicians to replace a positioner without blocking the control valve while the valve continues to operate. Additionally, a four line human machine interface (HMI) LCD graphic display, with four button navigation, can be viewed in a wide variety of languages. Histograms and other graphic information about advanced valve diagnostics can be viewed on the display as well.
“Traditional non-contacting technology allows for less wear and maintenance, but at the risk of reduced accuracy. With GMR technology, which we’ve featured in the VP300, the positioner is less sensitive to vibration, offering both accuracy and less wear,” quotes Ron Salerno, business manager for Process Instrumentation, Siemens Industry.
