June 3, 2010 VYCON announced an enhancement to its Direct Connect VDC-XE UPS backup system that is specifically designed for high power energy storage applications. The enhanced VDC-XE product is now capable of providing up to 4,000 kilowatt /seconds of energy storage. VYCONs enhanced VDC-XE is the perfect solution for high power applications such as data centers, healthcare facilities and other mission-critical operations that may require up to 30-40 seconds of back-up power. This extended run time will allow several stand-by engine generators to start and synchronize and allow the VDC-XE to gracefully transfer to the generators upon a utility power outage. Utilizing VYCONs flywheel technology, the enhanced VDC-XE compatible with all major brands of three-phase Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems is available now for immediate requirements. Featuring a 20-year life without a major service interval, the enhanced VDC-XE units power electronics and high speed rotor design provide significantly improved power density and run time. As with VYCONs VDC systems, the enhanced VDC-XE replaces traditional lead-acid backup batteries used with UPS systems providing users with a smarter, more reliable and greener approach to power protection. Lead-acid batteries are toxic, heavy, maintenance intensive, need frequent replacement, have special disposal requirements and demand costly cooling to maintain service life. In applications where traditional 15 seconds for run-time is adequate, the new VDC-XE provides 20 percent more energy storage capability than the previous XE product. Utilizing VYCONs enhanced VDC-XE product, customers can reduce initial capital cost along with space requirements as potentially less flywheel units will be required for a particular power and run time. This will also reduce on-going energy cost and operating cost over the life of the installation.For applications without an engine generator-set or for those who still want to use batteries, the VDC-XE can operate in parallel with batteries. In this configuration, the VDC is the first line of defense against power disturbances saving the batteries for prolonged power outages. By absorbing the power glitches, the VDC systems significantly increase battery life by handling over 98 percent of the discharges that would normally have shortened the batteries useful life. And, with the models slim footprint, the VDC occupies only a fraction of the floor space of batteries an important benefit for todays dense computing environments. VYCON flywheel systems incorporate a host of advanced features that make the systems easy to use, maintain and monitor such as self-diagnostics, log files, adjustable voltage settings, RS-232/485 interface, alarm status contacts, soft-start pre-charge from the DC bus and push-button shutdown. Available options include DC disconnect, remote monitoring, Modbus and SNMP communications and real-time monitoring software.
