October 12, 2009 - Softing announced a firmware version for its PROFIBUS-Inspektor. The new software version is available as a free download from Softing's web page. The PROFIBUS-Inspektor reliably detects even subtle, initially uncritical deteriorations in the network communication by continuously monitoring the network traffic. If maintenance action is required, the tool automatically alerts the maintenance staff. This allows implementing a condition-based/predictive maintenance strategy that reduces operator intervention from replacing devices on a regular basis (preventative maintenance) to replacing devices only when they are at risk of failure. The following is a summary of the key product features:
Permanently monitors the communication of a PROFIBUS network
Detects even subtle degradation in network communication; long before it becomes critical
Provides a clear overview of the bus status
Allows the implementation of a predictive maintenance strategy
Optional - full protocol analyzer functionalityThe user-friendly GUI is displayed in a standard web browser and provides a quick overview on the status of your network using the familiar "traffic light" color scheme (red, yellow, and green). The tool monitors a set of fieldbus-health indicators with individual thresholds for alarming. The threshold for each individual indicator is user-configurable through the web browser to fit application-specific needs. The PROFIBUS-Inspektor automatically generates alarm messages and snapshots of the bus traffic before and after an indicator exceeds the configured threshold. The PROFIBUS-Inspektor safely attaches, even temporarily, to a PROFIBUS network without interfering with its operation and can be used without the need for a degree in electrical engineering. As an entirely passive node the PROFIBUS-Inspektor does not occupy a PROFIBUS address or require a change in a PLC program. Just connect the PROFIBUS-Inspektor to a network. You can use Softings non-intrusive drop cable BC-131-PB to attach the PROFIBUS-Inspektor to a running network or in case the PROFIBUS connector type used in your application/ cabinet does not allow attaching the diagnostic tool directly. The majority of global end-users have identified Softing's PROFIBUS Diagnostic Toolset as the best-in-class tools that more than satisfied their requirements. Today, many companies have standardized on Softing's toolset.
