Beckhoff adds IO-Link to EtherCAT

March 26, 2009 – Beckhoff Automation released the EL6224 EtherCAT terminal for IO-Link. The EL6244 makes the Beckhoff EtherCAT I/O system compatible with the new IO-Link standard for the lower field level. The IO-Link integration hardware is extremely compact - up to four IO-Link devices can be connected in a standard terminal housing with a width of just 12 mm (0.5-inches).A point-to-point connection is used between the terminal and the IO-Link device so existing wiring topologies are maintained. The EL6244 terminal is parameterized via the master, through TwinCAT software from Beckhoff for example. Any number of EL6224 devices can be used in an EtherCAT I/O node. Connections to EtherCAT or other fieldbuses can be established easily via EtherCAT Couplers or from CX series Embedded PCs from Beckhoff. The high performance offered by EtherCAT serves as the ideal basis for connecting a large number of IO-Link devices. Additional 24 V and 0 V connection points can be created using EL918x potential distribution terminals.Transfer rates of 4.8 kbaud, 38.4 kbaud and 230 kbaud are possible with a cable length of up to 15 m (49-feet). Power is supplied via the internal terminal bus (E-bus) and the power contacts. The high-performance EtherCAT I/O Terminal system permits communication to 1,000 distributed I/O in just 30 microseconds (µs), almost unlimited network size and optimum vertical integration using industrial Ethernet and Internet technologies. EtherCAT Terminals are available for all common digital and analog signal types used in the world of automation. An enormous range of fieldbus devices such as those for DeviceNet, PROFIBUS, PROFINET, CANopen, Interbus or Lightbus can be integrated via local fieldbus master/slave terminals.Beckhoff Automation provides advanced, open automation products based upon proven technologies so that customers can implement high performance control systems faster and at a lower overall cost than traditional PLC and motion control systems. Beckhoff’s “New Automation Technology” product range includes PC based control, industrial PCs, automation controllers, operator interface, I/O, servo drives and motors. With representation in more than 60 countries, Beckhoff is well positioned to provide global sales and service to its customers. Sales and service are handled directly, with no intermediaries involved to provide faster response and improved communications
