June 30, 2009 Siemens Energy & Automation announces the Sirius 3RA6 compact starter, a one-stop motor starter product for three-phase AC standard motors up to 32 amps. The Sirius 3RA6 compact starter represents a new generation of weld-free starters that offer the combined functionality of a circuit breaker, contactor and electronic overload overlay to reduce engineering and assembly costs while simplifying commissioning. Until now, customers had to source and purchase multiple components separately, whereas the Sirius 3RA6 compact starter incorporates all these elements into one combined unit to simplify engineering and procurement. The combined direct and reversing starter have a small footprint to save space in the control cabinet, and the infeed system provides an integrated power supply to save line-side wiring labor. The Sirius 3RA6 starter range of motors has also been revamped to make it easier for customers to select the appropriate starter. By having wide setting ranges up to 32 amps of rated current along with three wide voltage ranges for AC/DC current with 24, 42 to 70 and 110 to 240 volts, selecting the appropriate motor is faster and easier. The compact starters are available as direct starters and reversing starters to cover a large percentage of motor applications. They are well-suited for applications requiring the highest machine availability. With the associated control kit, the user can perform an early check of the wiring and motor direction before the plant begins operations in order to prevent faults and increase plant availability. The safe shutdown at the end of service life and separate indication of overload, short-circuit and auto reset following an overload trip also help increase uptime. The removable spring-loaded and screw-type terminals simplify device replacement, providing easy maintenance. To save on wiring costs, the user can simply plug the Sirius 3RA6 compact starter into the associated, pre-wired infeed system for a fast and economical installation. This infeed system can be easily expanded to meet the plants needs simply by adding additional slots and Sirius industrial controls components, such as 3RV1 circuit breakers or the 3RV19 infeed system. PE terminals are also available to enable a direct connection between the motor cables and the Sirius 3RA6 infeed system. To further reduce the overhead involved in control circuit integration, Siemens offers AS-Interface modules (AS-1) to connect the Sirius 3RA6 compact starter directly to the AS-Interface. The AS-I module can easily be connected to the compact starter and used as an A/B slave on AS-Interface. All the diagnostics and status data of the compact starter are forwarded directly to the higher-level controller via a network, which offers expanded diagnostics from the motor starter while minimizing wiring requirements.
