Moog announces turbine and testing actuators

  • April 12, 2007

Böblingen, April 12, 2007 - At the Hannover Industrial Fair 2007, Moog will present their portfolio of electric, hydraulic and hybrid drive technology for industrial applications. Two new solution designs will be introduced at the trade show: a patented electromechanical actuator (fail safe actuator) for the use in gas turbines as well as an electrical multi-axis actuator unit incorporating innovative software control for automotive testing. Moog is the first manufacturer to provide a patented fail safe actuator which, based on its electromechanical drive, controls the valve flow in gas turbines and offers more in the way of fire safety than hydraulic systems. Thus it is ideal for use in safety critical systems. Other benefits include cost reductions for the machine applications due to the lack of hydraulic connection and thus reduced space requirements. For automotive testing applications Moog shows their new approach for electric actuator application design using the new SmarTEST ONE servo controller, this servo controller can be easily fitted into electromechanical or electrohydraulic test environments and features outstanding reliability and ease of operation. In combination with a Moog FCS actuator drive system, e.g., the so called Hexapod technology the design allows improved possibilities in automotive testing such as shorter test cycles, lower downtimes and reduced lifecycle and energy cost. Moog is one of the leading providers of high performance, customised drive systems based on electrohydraulic and electromechanical technologies. Working with their customers, the company develops flexible systems, which are customized to meet individual requirements. The presence at the Hannover Fair will concentrate on customer applications in the field of gas turbines using the example of a fail safe mechanism and an electric actuator unit with new software control, for realistic motion simulation in automotive testing. Moog will present their latest examples of electric, hydraulic and hybrid motion control technology for industrial applications. New solutions that will be featured in live demonstrations and descriptive videos at the trade show are: 1. Power Generation-Moog developed an electric failsafe actuator with a patented spring arrangement and applied turbine axis control from a Moog Servocontroller to free processing power. 2. Automotive Testing: Moog's hexapod solution (hydraulic or electric control) provides an ideal platform for structural tests in an accelerated mode. We developed of a unique dynamic library link for our high performance servocontroller to allow easy interfacing to existing customer software.3. Metal Forming: Moog eliminated the inherent quality issues in a deep draw press by partnering with a research institute (Institut für Umformtechnik) to apply closed-loop pressure control for the full range of 0 to 200 bar. 4. Water Wave Generator for Testing Ships and Offshore Equipment: Moog developed a new Moog Axis Control Valve and implemented an intelligent decentralized fieldbus communication network for precise synchronization and remote diagnostics for a large number of axes. 5. Heavy Industry: Moog designed a new high-end dynamic spool-in-bushing valve without internal o-ring for higher reliability in steel mills and other demanding environments. 6. High End, Low-Noise Pumps- Moog developed a second generation radial piston pump with optimized piston arrangement and new sliding stroke ring to help customers meet the new European noise reduction directives for machine builders. In various video installations the visitors will learn more about Moog's new solutions for individual applications. The overall theme is "Creative Solutions for Challenging Motion Control Applications".About MoogMoog's Industrial Business Unit designs and manufacturers high performance motion control solutions combining electric, hydraulic, and hybrid technologies with expert consultative support in a range of applications including plastics, metal forming, power generation, test and simulation.
