Souriau releases IP 69 bayonet coupling connector

November 30, 2006 - Today’s industrial applications demand ever increasing levels of reliability from cost effective electrical interconnect solutions. Introducing UTS series: a high performance, competitively positioned connector that provides a unique solution to this requirement, especially in harsh environments.UTS connectors are fitted with seals to provide sealing in accordance with IP68 & IP69K standards. This means that the connectors are able to withstand water immersion at a depth of 10 m and high-pressure cleaning @ 140 bars. The seal is dynamic in that it is maintained even in the event of the cable being subjected to a pulling or bending motion. This is assured by a locking principle that maintains constant pressure on the sealing surfaces. The material, polyamide reinforced with fibreglass, performs very well under shock and vibration, and can be used at temperatures ranging from -40°C to +105°C. It can withstand over 1,000 hours of salt spray and is resistant to UV radiation, which further enhances its reliability during outdoor use. It’s fire resistance is classified as UL 94-V0 under the UL reference standard, meaning that the product does not support combustion and is self-extinguishing. Furthermore, if it is exposed to a flame, the smoke given off has a very low level of toxicity; it is thus suitable for use in mass transport equipment such as railway systems. These characteristics make it an ideal connector system for a wide range of applications. For example, UTS is vital for connections on road networks, in the presence of very high levels of corrosion due to exhaust gases, or in food and agriculture, which requires non-polluting materials that stand up to high temperatures and high-pressure cleaning jets. Typical applications for UTS connectors are portable instrumentation, robotics, site vehicles and agricultural machines, water treatment plants, underwater applications (swimming pools, fountains) or marine applications, railways, stage lighting and electronics, and any other outdoor applications requiring connections with high levels of reliability.UTS connectors are available in 3 shell sizes, and 9 contact arrangements with 3 to 19 contacts. In conformity with VDE, UL and RoHS regulations, UTS is available in male and female genders, The plug connector backshell has an impressive cable diameter range from 1.5 to 14 mm. Colour coding is also available, either as a visual aid to standard mechanical discrimination systems, or simply to add to the aesthetics of the product. The rated voltage is 500 V with configurations that meet the German VDE electrical safety requirements. A full range of contacts are available for terminating copper, sub miniature coax or fibre optic cables, or for soldering connectors directly to a PCB, adding to the extreme versatility of this connector system. The maximum current carrying capacity for machined or stamped & formed contacts terminated to copper conductors is 13 A.The mating mechanism has an ergonomic design; it uses a 1/3-turn bayonet type locking system producing a click that can be felt and heard, helping to guarantee secure connections. It’s design sets it apart from other systems available on the market, in providing a feeling of quality, robustness and good looks to compliment the equipment in which the UTS connector is integrated. The choice of materials, design, and production technology put UTS connectors in a class of their own and certainly outshine all of the rival low cost plastic waterproof connector systems currently on the market. Commercially, UTS connectors are extremely competitive against lower grade alternative systems, this is mainly due to the efficient use of state of the art, high volume manufacturing methods, and the optimisation in the use of plastics and modular assembly processes. Recognising the need to keep installed costs to a minimum, TRIM TRIO contacts are supported by a full range of tooling, from simple hand tools to fully automatic, industry standard, lead making machines. The UTS series forms part of the TRIM TRIO Interconnection System, which has the widest range of industrial connectors sharing common contact technology. This gives the designer the flexibility to terminate power, signal, COAX, or fibre optics through a single connector that is designed for a variety of applications or environments. Through its modularity, the wide range available, and its considerable resistance to harsh environments, the TRIM TRIO range is positioned as the reference product for circular or rectangular industrial connections.
