September 14, 2006 - The new "Industrial Ethernet Module" from IXXAT enables fast, low-cost connection of devices to ETHERNET Powerlink, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET. The module is based on an Altera-FPGA and contains the CPU (NIOS II), an Ethernet Controller and an integrated 2-port hub, which is routed out via an RJ45 connector. Depending on the version, the relevant protocol software for the implementation of an ETHERNET Powerlink controlled node, a PROFINET device or an EtherNet/IP adapters is already implemented on the module. With simple devices, connection to the application CPU can be made via a serial port or in the case of complex devices via the shared memory port (quasi dual-ported memory). In the case of simple applications, it is also possible to run these together with the relevant protocol software on the module. Device vendors can also integrate the hardware design in their own circuit instead of the plug-in module. A host-API in C-source code is supplied together with the module, which enables communication of the application CPU with the module via its interfaces. A baseboard is available as a supplement to the EPL module. This provides the power supply necessary for the evaluation of the EPL module as well as various bus connections. With the baseboard it is possible to implement a simple I/O device directly or to connect processor modules of Phytec (phyCORE-XC161, phyCORE-LPC2294) or Spectrum Digital (eZdsp F2812) to the EPL module via the integrated plugboards. The scope of supply includes the Industrial Ethernet Module with the relevant protocol software, a programming interface in C-source code and a programming example.
