Over 6,000 companies showed products at Hannover Messe and there are important trends that are worth noting.
 
Network Protocols Less Important
Selecting one network is becoming less important when evaluating networks because many vendors support multiple networks and gateways are available to bridge networks. There are a number of industrial network types that are being used for sensors, controllers, synchronized motion, and enterprise communications. Some network requirements will significantly trim the available choices, with coordinated motion being a prime example. Users can select the best products to solve application challenges.
 
More Power
The dramatic increase in computing power on a chip is being seen in the power of controllers. Smaller PLCs have significantly more power than they did a few years ago. A big driver for this has been 32 bit processor chips with integrate Ethernet and other communications.
 
Embedded Control
Companies with products previously controlled by a PLC or DCS are now incorporating the control in their devices. This is happening because of the computing power on a chip and the availability of complete IEC 61131-3 software suites, without the large development investment. OEMs can leverage the software investment made by companies like K-W and 3-S and have a complete control and design suite without making a large development investment.
 
Integration of Electronic and Hydraulic/Pneumatic
Industrial network communications, and in some cases, the complete control are being incorporated into hydraulic and pneumatic devices. This is just example of the application of embedded controls just described.  PLCopen is launching a new initiative in the Motion Control working group to extend the specifications to fluid power and creating certifications for suppliers.
 
Greater Integration
Controllers at the traditional PLC level are integrating more functions such as high speed coordinated motion control and sophisticated machine diagnostics.

IP 67 Wireless WLAN 802.11b/g interfaces with M12 connections to Ethernet automation devices and supports industrial Ethernet protocols such as Profinet, Modbus/TCP, or Ethernet/IP. The device can be connected as an industrial WLAN client module directly to the Ethernet port of an automation device. Since controllers can access all of the WLAN functionality via Ethernet, applications can be implemented in a versatile manner. The unit has two connectors - power of 9-30 VDC M12 Connector (A-Coded Male) and Ethernet M12 Connector (D-Coded Female). Compact Managed Switches with Shipboard Approval
The new compact Lean Managed (LM) switches from the Factory Line product range of Phoenix Contact are compatible with fiber-optic networks and offer special management features. They allow users to connect copper-based Ethernet devices or network segments to any type of fiber-optic Ethernet network. This product range includes compact 6-port switches with two fiber-optic ports in ST/BFOC or ST/BF SC formats. The switches support multimode or singlemode optical fibers. 5-port or 8-port twisted pair LM switches are available for twisted pair networks. PSR Safety Relay
The PSR Trisafe relay is a configurable safety module. With a width of only 67.5 mm, this relay can be used to monitor up to 20 incoming safety signals. It provides four intrinsically safe outputs as well as outputs for clock signals, alarms, and ground switches. The safety logic can be customized using drag-and-drop functionality in the graphical configuration software, Safeconf, that includes a simulation mode and automatic logic check function. Rapid Contacting for Photovoltaic Modules
The PV-JB 2.5/2-20 junction box is designed for use with thin film or crystal modules with lower power ratings. This box is available in an IP65-rated enclosure. To establish the required contacts, simply position it above the contact ribbons and press it down into place.  The junction box can make contact with two ribbons 4 mm wide and 0.3 mm thick. Since both the design and the materials in use comply with VDE 0126, this box conforms to current photovoltaic standards. GSM Modems
New GSM modems from Phoenix Contact make use of the worldwide GSM cellular network in conjunction with Internet technology to provide secure connections to distant industrial Ethernet networks. In addition to on-demand GSM dial-up connections for classic remote servicing of machines and systems, this modem can also be used to establish TCP/IP-based GPRS connections. The terminal outlet from Phoenix Contact allows routing of all fiber optic cable and copper cable and is available in a wide range of product versions for all standard data plug connectors from Phoenix Contact. The generous opening in the cover allows safe and simple installation in all mounting positions. The terminal outlet can be mounted on walls or standard support sections with integrated outer lugs. The aluminum enclosure provides protection against tough industrial environments. IP65/67 protection is achieved using a special sealing system. Configurable Control Cards
The new motion control card provides greater flexibility and communications with the new generation of configurable VT-HACD-2X control cards from Rexroth. In addition to the common field buses, the VT-HACD-2X also supports Ethernet communication. This is a real-time controller delivering closed loop control for position, pressure, and force as well as managing control irrespective of the machine control’s cycle time. The functional scope of the HACD-2X has been extended to 3 control loops and a second SSI input. All analog outputs now offer 14 bit signal processing. IP 67 DP VT-ZBUS Profibus Hydraulic/Pneumatic Module
The new IP 67 VT-ZBUS bus module from Rexroth connects hydraulic on/off valves, pneumatic valves, and sensors with control over PROFIBUS DP. The unit uses an innovative pulse width modulation to apply 24V volts to the switching solenoids and shortens the switching processes of 12V coils by up to 60 percent. Modular Pneumatic Valve Supports PROFIBUS DP, CANopen, DeviceNet, Sercos III and EtherCAT
The unit features eight M12 sockets with 16 digital ports to connect actuators and sensors. The internal device logic allows configuration of each socket as input or output and users can configure a safe state for each individual port. Three-colored LEDs directly at the bus module indicate the respective operating state. The CD01/02-PI has a modular design and can hold up to 16 valves. CD01 valves are characterized by a width of 26 mm and a flow rate of 1350 liters per minute; CD02 valves have a width of 18 mm and a flow rate of 650 liters per minute. Valves with different flow rates can be combined in a valve terminal system. To enable a simplified machine design, all electrical and pneumatic connections face in one direction. Plug-in valves make it possible to exchange the valves in the valve terminal system quickly and easily. Valve Integrates I/O link interface
The LS04 valve terminal system is now available with an integrated I/O link interface for the incorporation of actuators. Incorporating the I/O link interface can reduce wiring and commissioning by communicating process, diagnostic, and parameterization data directly at the lowest field level. RFID Protected Valves
Each valve has an RFID transponder that contains information on the valve's properties. Every base plate in a valve terminal system has an antenna that can read out the data from the transponder. The current configuration of a valve terminal system is shown on a control unit display and indicates any incorrect combinations. For example, if a 5/3-way valve is replaced with a 5/2-way valve, a corresponding display will be output on the control unit. An automatic check prevents the wrong valves from being installed and increases system reliability by improving function security once the production process has been started.  Click for More Information

X20 X67 Safety Module
The new X67 Safety module expands the X20 Safety product range by adding a module with IP67 protection. Equipped with 8 safe input channels and 4 safe output channels and a minimum X2X cycle time of 200 µs. Onboard functions such as filtering, two-channel evaluation, and internal and external tests are similar to the functions in the existing X20SI and X20SO products. The new X67 SafeIO module is compatible with Automation Studio programming and diagnostics tools. The channels are connected using virtual wiring in Automation Studio's safe editor. Communication via POWERLINK Safety guarantees that process data is exchanged in a secure manner, and also makes it possible to automatically set module parameters during maintenance. APC820 Integrates Drive & PC
The APC820 integrates a PC in a drive. Completely new options and complex automation tasks that were previously distributed over a number of system platforms (e.g. controller, Windows computer, etc.) are now brought together in a single device. The APC820 is based on a high-performance Core™2 Duo processors with Windows XP and a real-time operating system running parallel to each other on separate processor cores. Projects are easily developed in B&R Automation Studio. Onboard interfaces allows the APC820 to be integrated in an automation system. Real-time communication between APC820, I/Os and drives using a POWERLINK interface achieving cycle times down to 200 µs and ultra-precise timing < 1 µs. The two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces provide machine level communication that is completely separated from the connection to the company network. B&R integrates IO Link in X20 System
B&R integrates IO Link in the X20 System. This is made possible by the X20 digital module DS4387. All four channels are IO Link channels, but can also be used as standard inputs or outputs. The specified 3-line connection can be implemented thanks to the connector system with 12 terminal points per module that is only available with X20. All specified baud rates are also supported. POWERLINK provides access via device description files in XML format. to integrate IO-Link points with the higher-level bus system.  Click for More Information

The AX5000 Servo Drive series from Beckhoff is being expanded to include six drives with higher rated currents. The AX5000 Servo Drive series from Beckhoff integrates high-end control technology while supporting fast and highly dynamic positioning tasks. The drives utilize EtherCAT for high-performance system communication to interface with PC-based control technology. The single-channel Servo Drives from the AX51xx series (rated up to 25 A) and the dual-channel AX52xx series (rated up to 2 x 6 A) are available and already widely used. Accelerometer Interface
The EL3632 EtherCAT Terminal enables the direct connection of accelerometers via an IEPE (Integrated Electronics Piezo-Electric) or ICP (Integrated Circuit Piezoelectric) interface. The internal structure of the PROFINET IO Device Chip, optimized for the requirements of IRT, provides an extremely low bridge delay and a very high time stamp resolution.
