ABB to optimize CRH cement plants

January 31, 2013 – ABB won a contract with CRH Europe Materials to provide process optimization solutions for 12 of their plants in Europe and the US. CRH is a diversified building materials group which produces and provides building material products from the fundamentals of heavy materials to value-added exterior products.

CRH is a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Cement Sustainability Initiative. As such, the company has committed to a set of objectives covering issues such as CO2 and climate protection, emission protection and lower use of fuels and raw materials. Currently the data collection for calculating the required key performance indicators from their plants is done individually and often manually. ABB’s proven Knowledge Manager software will help to automate this process and collect the information centrally from a regional server.

ABB’s scope includes software licenses, engineering of the tailored application, as well as commissioning. Installation and commissioning started in 2012 and will be continued in 2013. The initial installation in three cement plants has already been completed.

ABB’s longstanding relationship with the existing installed base within CRH, its in-depth knowledge in process automation as well as proven concepts with other cement producers, were important factors in winning this contract.

cpmPlus Knowledge Manager is a software solution that helps customers in the cement and mineral processing industry meet production, operational and quality objectives. The software facilitates the extensive operation of collecting process and quality data in real-time from the plant. Users can then access this information in the form of meaningful reports, trends and analyses that help them to make key decisions how to operate and optimize their process. As the software solution is web-based, the operators can access the information exactly where and when they need it. Due to its modular design, Knowledge Manager can easily be adapted to the customer’s current needs and can grow with the user’s requirements.

ABB is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 145,000 people.
