POSITAL enhances programmability of IXARC rotary encoders

November 4, 2014 - POSITAL introduced programming capabilities and tools for their IXARC series of rotary encoders. With these new capabilities, the encoders’ performance characteristics can be extensively modified through software changes, without requiring any changes to physical components. This increases the versatility of these devices for end users and helps distributors offer a wide range of options without having to increase the number of models held in inventory. IXARC rotary encoders incorporate both absolute and incremental measurement capabilities in a single device. These can be configured to operate as absolute encoders (for position measurement tasks), as incremental encoders (ideal for monitoring speed of rotation), or as hybrid encoders that can measure absolute position and rate of rotation simultaneously.

In a related development, POSITAL is introducing the UBIFAST configuration tool, a hardware module that can be easily connected to programmable encoders through accessory cables. The UBIFAST tool features a built-in WiFi hotspot and webserver. Once the tool has been powered up, any WiFi-enabled smartphone, tablet, or laptop computer can connect to the WiFi hotspot and the configuration interface will automatically open up in a standard web browser window – no app, no software installation, and no Internet connection are required. The user is guided through the configuration process in three simple steps. And finally, POSITAL also presents an Internet-enabled configuration management system for IXARC programmable encoders. Whenever a device is reconfigured, the operator has the option of registering the changes with POSITAL through an automatic email interface. The configuration history of the device, identified by serial number, will then be updated in a database maintained by the company. If a replacement part is required, this record can be retrieved and used to manufacture an encoder with an identical configuration. It can also be provided to a distributor or system integrator who could retrieve a matching device from their stock, enter the appropriate software parameters, and deliver the completed unit directly to the end user.

Company background
POSITAL, a highly specialized manufacturer of absolute and incremental rotary encoders as well as inclinometers, belongs to the FRABA group which dates back to 1918, when its predecessor Franz Baumgartner elektrische Apparate GmbH, a producer of relays, was established. In 1963, the parent company introduced the first metallic brush-based absolute rotary encoders, and developed optical absolute encoders in the 1970s. Founded in the 1980s, the company’s encoder division established itself as a successful supplier for the machine building industry. In 1993, the management consultant Christian Leeser, his brother Dr. Achim Leeser, and Axel Wiemann, head of the encoder division, acquired the company and restructured it with a new management. Today, the group consists of independent companies that employ a staff of 120 at locations in Germany, Singapore, and the USA, and operate a state-of-the-art production plant in Poland. Over the last few years, POSITAL has developed various innovative products, including optical and magnetic safety encoders as well as high-resolution magnetic multi-turn encoders.
