Schaffner acquires Transformer Engineering

April 4, 2014 - On March 31, 2014, the Schaffner group acquired US based Transformer Engineering, known as TRENCO. This acquisition strengthens considerably Schaffner’s presence in the Power Magnetics and Power Quality markets in the USA while complementing Schaffner’s global product offerings.

TRENCO will be renamed as Schaffner Trenco and integrated as part of the Power Magnetics division of Schaffner. Besides EMC components and filters, Schaffner is known for its comprehensive product range of transformers, reactors and power quality products such as the successful Schaffner ECOsine Active & ECOsine Passive harmonic filters. Schaffner offers superior design and quality power magnetics solutions for the traction (rolling stock & trackside power), conventional and renewable energy generation & storage markets. Schaffner Trenco’s products are typically used in traction, renewable energy generation, energy-efficient motor drive systems and in many other industrial applications, creating an attractive addition to Schaffner’s current product portfolio. In the field of power quality, Schaffner Trenco has proven success with their patented 18-pulse transformer technology.

Whereas this acquisition will expand the technological expertise of Schaffner in the area of Power Magnetics and Power Quality, it will provide Schaffner Trenco access to Schaffner’ s worldwide manufacturing operations, complementary products and technologies such as water-cooled solutions. The addition of Schaffner Trenco continues to increase the group’s broad range of products as well as development and production capabilities which now include sales and development in all major markets such as Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, China, Thailand and the United States.

Schaffner Trenco will continue to operate under the same management team in their current Cleveland, Ohio location. The Power Magnetics division of Schaffner is poised to consolidate its position as one of the leading suppliers of magnetics components worldwide to the before mentioned market segments, develop new applications and expand sales activities, application engineering and manufacturing into emerging markets.
