Vishay installs Reel Optimizing System in European paper mill
Vishay's customized Reel Optimizing System, delivered in April to the Ortmann Mill, uses strain gage-based load cells to improve roll density by controlling the nip force throughout the entire reel spool change-over process. The system replaces the existing pneumatic cylinder pressure control system with a hydraulic cylinder force and position control system.
Vishay's Reel Optimizing System is designed to provide online measurement and control, on each side of the machine, of all force and movement. This method eliminates all problems caused by friction, non-parallelism, and general wear and tear. The effect of different spool weights on nip force is eliminated by automatic weighing of each spool, which is carried out when changing reel spools in the primary arms. Each system controls nip force during the shifting phase and corrects for angle changes when lowering reel spools. Parallelism, acceleration, and speed are all controlled during the lowering process, which greatly reduces machine vibration. This process minimizes variations in reel drum speed and web tension. When shifting, the forces between the primary and secondary arms are added to ensure that the required nip force is maintained.
Reel Optimizing System measurement data is presented online as current data. The system's optimizing logger stores the data for later analysis in servicing as well as quality and product research. Multiple nip force set values for different qualities can be pre-programmed and even adjusted within selected areas by an operator.
Vishay's Reel Optimizing System was installed on Ortmann Mills paper machine number 4, which produces consumer tissue. The machine was installed in 1992 and has an annual capacity of 88,000mt/y. It has a trim width of 7.0m and a maximum speed of 1,830m/min.
