FieldComm and PI find a home for FDI technology

November 7, 2014 – FDI Cooperation, FieldComm Group and Profibus & Profinet International jointly announce the strategy on providing FDI Technology to the market and secure the future development and maintenance of FDI.

The FieldComm Group is to be the new home of FDI technology starting in close cooperation with PI International with the distribution of FDI tools for FF, HART, PROFIBUS and PROFINET protocols in the first quarter of 2015. In mid 2015, the FDI Cooperation, LLC will be dissolved and FDI Technology be continued in FieldComm Group. End users as well as automation vendors will benefit from the Group being the single source for FDI technology and ensuring consistency and harmonization across the various communication protocols also in future.

In a letter of intent, PI and FieldComm Group express their will to continue their joined efforts to promote the Field Device Integration (FDI) Technology. This ensures the consistent support of the technology after the life time of the FDI Cooperation, LLC.

Three main areas of cooperation have been identified and will be pursued:
-    Both parties will ensure, that the market is well served with FDI technology and the tools and components for FDI including functions and features for Foundation Fieldbus, HART, PROFIBUS and PROFINET protocols.
-    PI and FieldComm Group  will jointly maintain and further develop the FDI Technology including the Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL).
-    Both organizations will continue to use their existing structure of Technical Support and Conformance Testing around the world to help their members with the implementation of FDI Technology to ensure the high quality standard end users expect and maintain interoperability between different vendors.

Ted Masters, President & CEO of FieldComm Group believes the partnership with PI will “more efficiently deliver a set of FDI tools across these leading protocols and provide future enhancements and harmonization of FDI to the benefit of our members and end users.
Karsten Schneider, Chairman of PI says: “This joint approach will fulfil the requirements of End Users and Automation vendors on a single cross protocol integration technology – One device package for all tools”
