This webinar explains the methods in Z1.9 and shows how to use it in a modern setting. Participants learn the modern methods based on any simple statistical calculator that can provide the mean and standard deviation of a data set. Excel is also a good tool for this application

Many companies use attribute sampling plans at incoming, in-process, and final inspection. The common approach uses ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 or the Zero Acceptance Number plans. However, a company may reduce costs and improve decisions using ANSI/ASQ Z1.9 with its smaller sample sizes and reliance on actual data.

Z1.9 uses measurements and their evaluation to make lot acceptance decisions. It looks complicated because the calculation techniques predate the common calculator. A simple statistical calculator eliminates the need for the seemingly involved calculations of the mean and standard deviation. Z1.9 uses information more effectively. When an inspection operation converts variables to attributes, it discards information. Basing the inspection on variables uses the information more effectively and allows smaller sample sizes.

Z1.9 is an efficient method for acceptance sampling that is easy to implement with a calculator or spreadsheet.

If you are concerned that your inspection is too complicated and uses too many resources, then Z1.9 may be a viable alternate. Because of its history, it looks complicated. However, the standard uses methods for statistical calculations based on the slide-rule era. Modern tools, such as calculators and spreadsheets, simplify the method.

An inspection that takes actual measurements and converts them to attributes to use Z1.4 or similar methods is not efficient. Typically, the sample sizes are too large and the work to determine the value for the large sample size can be excessive.
