Bosch Rexroth to highlight IIoT packaging solutions at PACK EXPO 2016

November 3, 2016 - Bosch Rexroth will showcase its solutions for the packaging industry, November 6-9, 2016, at PACK EXPO International in Chicago, Illinois. Throughout the conference, attendees are invited to Bosch Rexroth’s Innovation Tour, an interactive experience that features demonstrations of a multitude of technologies, both within the Rexroth booth as well as customer booths.

Show attendees can see the company’s latest  demo, a distrubution conveyor system developed with modular packaging machine designer, IASE, that incorporates IASE’s Michelangelo robot. The demo incorporates Bosch Rexroth kinematics, an IndraDrive M Dual Drive configuration with Rexroth’s high performance MSK motors and integrated drive safety.

During this year’s PACK EXPO, attendees will have the opportunity to explore Rexroth technologies on the Innovation Tour. With demonstrations available in the Rexroth booth as well as select customer booths, the tour highlights a number of Rexroth’s Industry 4.0, Safety on Board, Open Core Engineering and 4EE capabilities. More information on the Innovation Tour, including a list of participating exhibitors, will be available in the South Hall at booth #S-2872.

Bosch Rexroth will showcase a distribution conveyor demo within its booth, featuring IASE’s Michelangelo robot. The system is driven by an MSK-050 multi-turn absolute servo motor. As a product travels downstream a Vision System, in this case Keyence, will take multiple pictures  and capture X, Y, rotational angle, and belt position. The vision system will also detect for imperfections in the product based on the customer specification. This information will be transmitted to the R150 Michelangelo Robot.

When the product enters the envelope of the robot it will synchronize to the traveling speed of the product and pick the product by means of a vacuum. Once the product is picked the R150 will desynchronize from the distribution conveyor and check if a tray or carton is within range. If a tray or carton is within range the R150 will synchronize to the speed of that tray or carton and deposit the product in the predetermined configuration based on the customer
specification. If a tray or carton is not within range, it will move to a buffer position and wait for the next available tray or carton to deposit in. The R150 will repeat this process until the designated configuration is complete.

One of the most dominant topics across the automation and manufacturing industry landscape right now is Industry 4.0 — where the virtual world of information technology, the physical world of machines and the Internet are merging to become one. The advances in machine-to-machine communication, and the vastly improved intelligence in those machines, are leading to more automated processes, machine self-monitoring and results in real time. These advancements are also enabling the use of mobile devices in automation systems. Bosch Rexroth’s innovative Open Core Engineering system is a key tool in helping drive this change.

Rexroth offers the IndraDrive Mi with its revolutionary cabinet-free power supply. This eliminates drive electronics from the cabinet and lets machine builders mount a more compact controls enclosure directly to the machine. The newest generation of IndraDrive Mi features integrated safety functions, extended communication options, intelligent control functions and an energy-efficient power supply, making it more useful and versatile than ever before.

The IndraDyn S series MS2N synchronous servo motors from Rexroth improve the consistency of the path velocity and hence the processing quality thanks to significantly reduced torque ripple. In conjunction with IndraDrive control units, completely new applications are possible, with greater packaging machine uptime in networked environments using the MS2N motors as a data source.These new motors carefully perform intelligent scans all the way to the motor. The individual measurements of each motor, as well as the saturation and temperature data, are stored in the respective motor's memory and automatically processed by IndraDrive controllers.

Bosch Rexroth’s IndraControl XM21/22 programmable logic controllers (PLC) combine the speed of the Sercos automation bus with Rexroth’s IndraControl S20 input/output (I/O) series for one control system. The controllers are available with either an Intel 600 or 1,300 MHz ATOM processor (XM21/22), along with an onboard Sercos master featuring a cycle time as low as 250 µs. By integrating the company’s modular IndraControl S20 I/O series into the controller, Rexroth adds to the flexibility of the control system.
