Energy Control Technologies spins off sensorFact Services

April 2, 2015 - Energy Control Technologies formed a new company called sensorFact Services in an effort to allow their newly formed cloud-based services group to better focus on its targeted market, the emerging Internet of Things (IoT).

“sensorFact is a significantly different business and marketing model from the core business we started in 1983.” said Richard Combs P.E., who is President and founder of ECT.  “We want to ensure that sensorFact is able to succeed by allowing it to purely focus on its subscription based services and engage in marketing of its brand outside the box of a traditional facility automation engineering firm.”

The company will be led by its new President, Matt Horton, a 27 year technology veteran holding extensive experience in Internet start-ups; with the most recent 12 years held in the Building and Automation Controls segment.  The company also names Rena Hafer to the position of Vice President of Operations. 

“These two have a unique blend of technology experience and business acumen that makes for a winning dynamic.” Combs explained.  “The choice of these appointments was not difficult.” 

During a two-year incubation period, the sensorFact team worked to solve many problems around data acquisition, monitoring, and analysis faced by ECT’s existing customer base.  Horton says “After succeeding in developing a cloud-based solution that seems to satisfy the current customer demand, and offers so much opportunity for future growth, we felt the timing was appropriate to spin-off now in order to establish the dedicated operations necessary to grow the business.  Cultivating this business with a live captive customer base has been a truly unique opportunity. In the last two years, we prototyped the solution with several different languages and architectures, using a few different cloud service platforms.  There was one particular combination that excelled completely, and we built on that one.  Based on this testing, what we built distinctively will keep us competitive, even as the entire IoT market expands its reach.  We’re excited by the realization this opportunity brings, of being at the right place at the right time.”

sensorFact Services will now begin working to open its platform’s API, which will allow anyone to stream in sensor data.  At the moment, sensorFact offers its subscription services through negotiated contracts, but is developing a self-service web application for direct use of its “pointCollex” data acquisition technology.  “Once users are able to sign themselves up and utilize the service on their own, we will issue another announcement and with corresponding pricing at that time”, Said Hafer.  “We expect the pricing for basic services to be something around ten dollars per month.”
