Profichip celebrates its 15th anniversary

July 21, 2014 - In 1999, Wolfgang Seel founded Profichip and initially developed microchips for the PROFIBUS system – one of the most important bus systems in the automation industry.

In 2003 the company finally succeeded in developing a completely new PLC processor that was faster than anything that existed in the automation industry at that time. Equally quickly, profichip were able to win recognition for the solution. Profichip has been growing steadily since then and today most of the market leaders in the automation industry today put chips from the Herzogenaurach Company in their products.

Meanwhile, 21 highly specialized developers work at the company headquarters on ever new and innovative solutions and in 2013 achieved a turnover of 8.5 million euros. “Our strength lies in our manageable size”, Wolfgang Seel explained. “This allows direct communication amongst us. Flat hierarchies and little bureaucracy make space for creativity and provide for an exceptionally high level of innovation. Thus, despite its growth, profichip remains quick and flexible – and this is necessary because the development in the automation industry is racing ahead very fast.”

The semiconductor chips are manufactured in Taiwan. “The specialists there also do the manufacturing for global players in the IT and telecommunications industry”, said Seel. Our own production at the company headquarters could not be operated economically, so we restrict ourselves here to our own core competency, which lies in engineering, and also take care of worldwide sales and marketing. A thoroughly successful business model as the many prizes and awards show. The company is recognized today as a leading ASIC design house and still focuses on complex chip solutions for fieldbus systems (such as PROFINET, CANopen, EtherCAT etc.) for industrial automation and communication. Thanks to years of experience and cutting-edge design methods, profichip has repeatedly been convincing with unique products, which have found the world’s attention and a growth in demand.

profichip is a subsidiary of VIPA GmbH, which already celebrates its 30th birthday next year. YASKAWA Europe GmbH has been the majority shareholder of both companies since 2012.
