Ball screw driven actuators offer backdrivability

Zaber's LAR/BAR Series of linear actuators are computer controlled, motorized linear actuators (electric cylinders) that are either lead screw (LAR) or ball screw (BAR) driven. Some of the differences between the screw options are backdrivability, performance at full duty cycle, and resolution. 

BAR Series actuators offer backdrivability as well as the capability to handle full duty cycle at high speeds. Inversely, LAR actuators are non-backdriveable, and their continuous runing thrust will be lower than BAR actuators if running at 100% duty cycle. However, lead screw driven LAR actuators will offer finer resolution than ball screw driven BAR actuators. 

If none of those features above make a difference to your application, you might consider specifications shared by both LAR and BAR actuators, including: 

  • 200 or 300 mm travel
  • 540 N peak thrust
  • Available with feedback encoders for slip/stall detection and automatic recovery
