Siemens adds safety functions to automation controllers

October 10, 2014 - Siemens adds safety functions to automation controllers, including   Simatic S7-1500, Simatic S7-1200 and  ET 200SP Distributed Controllers.

The main focus is on the enriched offering for Safety Integrated with failsafe CPUs, for all Advanced Simatic S7-1500 controllers,  Basic Simatic S7-1200 controllers, as well as ET 200SP Distributed Controllers. The range includes a software controller based on Simatic S7-1500 available for PC-based automation. New to the distributed controllers is the compact Open Controller featuring a PC-based software controller, visualization and central I/O in a single device. Go to siemens.com/simatic-controller for a clear overview of the entire range of automation controllers

The new controllers enhance the existing range of Simatic controllers and are also scalable in performance and functionality. The higher-performance controllers build on the functionality of less powerful controllers. Users benefit from uniform handling as well as a high degree of efficiency in engineering, operation and maintenance. The new Simatic controllers are seamlessly integrated into the TIA Portal (Totally Integrated Automation Portal) engineering framework. This simplifies engineering, configuration and use of new functions.

The key focus of the portfolio expansion is on Safety Integrated with CPUs for failsafe automation. There are four failsafe CPUs with different performance levels for supplementing the Simatic S7-1500 Advanced Controller: CPU 1517F is suitable for average to sophisticated safety applications, while the CPUs 1511F, 1513F and 1515F are designed for less complex tasks. For the first time there are two fail-safe CPUs available for the Simatic S7-1200 Basic Controller in the form of the 1214FC and 1215FC, in addition to a whole series of fail-safe I/O modules. This considerably enhanced Siemens offer for Safety Integrated is supplemented by the first 1510SP F and 1512SP F CPUs for modular, fail-safe automation with distributed controllers. With the new SP1 version of the Step 7 Safety Advanced V13 engineering tool, which has been enhanced with additional failsafe functions, users can create programs for Simatic Failsafe Controllers using the same engineering and operating concept for both standard and safety-related tasks.

Another first is that Siemens has now included PC-based automation in its offering for the current generation of Simatic controllers. The CPU 1507S software controller for PC-based automation with Simatic Industrial PCs is based on the Simatic S7-1500 and is operated independently of Windows, thus offering a high level of system availability: This is advantageous for fast controller ramp-up, for example, and makes it possible to carry out Windows updates and rebooting while the control system is running. The combination of a PC-based controller and programming in high-level languages is particularly suitable for special-purpose machine manufacturing. The programs and engineering handling for the new software controller are fully compatible with the standard Simatic S7-1500 controllers. It features both know-how and access protection as well as important automation functions such as for positioning axes, and interfaces to Profibus and Profinet.

A new distributed controller family member especially suitable for series machine manufacture is the compact Simatic ET 200SP Open Controller. The first controller of this type, it combines the functions of a PC-based software controller with visualization, Windows applications and central I/O in a single, compact device. The Open Controller can be flexibly expanded with standard ET 200SP modules and optimized for machines with distributed architecture. The compact design means it does not take up a lot of space in the control cabinet, for example.

The new controller offering from Siemens is rounded off with the Siplus S7-1518, the most powerful CPU yet for extreme ambient conditions. This CPU has the same performance characteristics as the corresponding high-end CPU from the Advanced Controller spectrum, but can be operated at installation altitudes between -1000 and +5000 meters. Siplus S7-1518 is suitable for operation in aggressive environments such as salt spray, as well as being resistant to corrosive gas atmospheres caused by chemically, biologically and mechanically active substances.

Background information:
The current Simatic Controller generation portfolio comprises Basic, Advanced, Distributed and Software Controllers. The S7-1200 Basic Controllers are used for simple and stand-alone applications and the S7-1500 Advanced Controllers for complex tasks while the ET 200SP Controllers are suitable for distributed applications and the Software Controllers for PC-based applications.
