Lewisburg, WV, September 27, 2004 - A new ASTM designation has been assigned to the ABB Gas Chromatograph PGC2007 On-Line Total Sulfur Analyzer - ASTM Method D7041-04. ASTM D7041-04, “Standard Test Method for Determination of Total Sulfur in Light Hydrocarbons, Motor Fuels, and Oils by Online Gas Chromatography with Flame Photometric Detection,” ASTM International. This new method provides industry the only on-line method with precision and bias data that is 2-5 times better than any other total sulfur measurement method. This is the only method to date that meets the requirements for trace sulfur in diesel compliance measurements.

Specifically, this test method covers the determination of total sulfur in liquid hydrocarbons with a final boiling point less than 450°C by gas chromatography using a flame photometric detector. In addition, this test method is applicable for total sulfur below 1 ppm up to levels greater than 100 ppm.The hardware and method developed for the PGC2007 has taken place to meet the growing urgency to lower the total sulfur content of hydrocarbon-based motor fuels to equal to or less than the limits imposed by countries in the European Union, North America and the Pacific Rim.

Based on the ABB PGC2000 Series process gas chromatographs, the PGC2007 instrument detects sulfur by using a flame photometric detector (FPD) and continues to be the accepted, field-proven technology for the measurement of trace sulfurs in fuel. The PGC2007 is a rugged, reliable fuel sulfur analyzer that provides:* On line Measurement of Total Sulfur* Simple, Analysis Method for Gasoline’s or Diesel* Minimal Hardware Requirement* Proven Gas Chromatograph Technology with the Flame Photometric Detector (FPD)* Unique Low Range Sensitivity* Excellent repeatability* ASTM 7041-04 Designation

Laboratory Total Sulfur Analyzer - (LGC2007)

A laboratory version of this Total Sulfur measurement technique (LGC2007) has been developed using an Agilent Model 6850 Laboratory Gas Chromatograph. A furnace and flame photometric detector have been added to allow the analyzer to provide the same type of accurate results which are available in the process analyzer. Utilizing an Auto-Injector the analyzer can be set-up for automatic injection and unattended operation. In addition, the Agilent "Chem-Station" software used in the system is widely used and accepted in many laboratories. This unique offering of both a Process Analyzer and a Laboratory Analyzer allows for validation and cross-referencing of samples being tested using the same technique.

To date, no other equipment has demonstrated through ASTM inter-laboratory testing the ability to meet the precision statement. This is not an endorsement or certification by ASTM international. For the referenced ASTM standard, visit the ASTM website, www.astm.org .
