Aquasensors New Innovative DataStick™ Analog Sensors Communicate Over Fieldbus Networks

2 min read

Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin: DataStick is a patent pending modular sensor system that provides a superior alternative to analog sensors in a wide range of applications including water, waste water, food, beverage, chemical, pulp & paper, and other process control. The DataStick modular design has three basic interchangeable parts that delivers a number of benefits to users. The DataStick enables programmable controllers, industrial PCs, and commercial PCs to perform in a wide range of applications that in the past could only be done with expensive Distributed Control Systems (DCS) or process instruments.

These applications can now be accomplished with Programmable logic controllers and PCs since DataSticks delivers flawless 24 bit resolution analog data directly over industrial networks including DeviceNet, Profibus, Modbus, Rockwell DF-1, USB, RS-232, and RS-485 to measure pH, ORP, DO, Ozone, Conductivity, Suspended Solids, and Resistivity. In addition temperature is measured with all sensors. This analog data quality is equal to or better than most DCS and process instruments deliver. The DataStick modular design provides significant cost savings lowering overall cost, simplifying maintenance and calibration. The DataStick system can be remotely calibrated, configured and diagnosed with any computer, HMI, or PLC through a single network cable.

Three parts make up the DataStick system to create the innovative new sensor system.

DataStick sensor body

The DataStickTM sensor body is common to all applications and accepts DataStick sensor heads and DataStick network interfaces. The DataStick sensor body automatically detects the sensor head type connected to it and configures itself to send data through the DataStick network interface module.

DataStick Sensor Head

Factory calibrated DataStick sensor heads contain the sensor, 24 bit analog to digital converter, and a temperature sensor. Signal loss or electrical interference from wiring is eliminated with this concept. Maintenance and repair is greatly simplified with DataStick hot swappable sensor heads that are changed without replacing the entire sensor and avoids rewiring. DataStick’s factory calibrated sensor heads are plug-and-play unlike other sensors that require lengthy calibration.

Processes are up and running in a fraction of time it takes with traditional sensors.DataStick sensor heads come factory calibrated and can be recalibrated in an office or lab. No more fumbling around with calibration solutions at the process, simply rotate DataStick sensor heads. The cost and problems of precision and isolated 4-20 ma loop power supplies required for traditional analog sensors is eliminated improving system accuracy. The DataStick is powered with network power or 9-30 VDC standard control panel power supplies.

DataStick Network Interface Modules

DataSticks Network Interface Modules provide network interfaces to popular industrial field buses including DeviceNet, Profibus, Modbus, Rockwell DF-1, USB, RS-232, and RS-485.

Integrated Sensor System

The DataStick’s’ measurement architecture eliminates the requirement for intermediate analyzers or transmitter boxes to reduces system costs, increase accuracy, faster installation, and eliminates the need to configure measurement scales after installation. MRO inventory is reduced since Network Interface Modules and DataStick Bodies are common to all sensor heads.DataStickTM sensors are designed for continuous industrial use and can be configured by the customer to measure any analytical parameter using a family of interchangeable sensor heads.AquaSensors offers standard fitting shapes/sizes for common mounting applications; AquaSensors engineers can custom design the DataStick body to fit any shape or size of fitting.

Sensor bodies are available in CPVC, 316 Stainless Steel, PEEK® and other materials.AquaSensors LLC was established to develop revolutionary sensor design offerings using integrated digital communications, remote adjustments, interchangeable factory calibrated sensor heads, and plug-and-play installation. For more information, visit www.aquasensors.com .
