The standard defines a common way for software, platforms and AI applications to discover, access and understand manufacturing information.

June 18, 2026 — The 1.0 release delivers precise requirements for what compliant systems must support, an automated Conformance Test Suite that validates any implementation against those requirements, an updated i3X Explorer, Python client library, MCP Server and full SDK documentation.

CESMII, The Smart Manufacturing Institute, today announced the 1.0 release of the Industrial Information Interoperability eXchange (i3X), a production-ready open interoperability standard supported by more than 40 manufacturing technology providers, establishing one of the industry’s largest collaborative efforts to simplify manufacturing integration and accelerate Industrial AI adoption. What launched as a beta initiative in April 2026 is now a complete, production-ready specification backed by a full developer toolkit and a significant, global ecosystem of manufacturing technology leaders.

i3X addresses one of the most persistent challenges in modern manufacturing: the proliferation of incompatible APIs and data silos that emerge as manufacturers adopt heterogeneous software stacks from multiple vendors. By establishing a vendor-agnostic, open, common API for contextualized manufacturing information, i3X enables application portability and AI-ready interoperability across any compliant platform, without locking organizations into proprietary infrastructure.

Why it matters

Unlike traditional APIs that are unique to each vendor and application, i3X provides a common way for software, platforms and AI applications to discover, access and understand manufacturing information. Developers can build applications once and deploy them across any i3X-compliant environment, dramatically reducing integration effort and accelerating innovation. By creating a common API across a growing ecosystem of platforms, i3X establishes the foundation for a new generation of portable manufacturing applications, enabling software developers, system integrators and manufacturers to build capabilities once and deploy them broadly across compliant environments.

“Manufacturing is entering an era where competitive advantage will increasingly come from the ability to rapidly deploy and scale digital capabilities. i3X creates the interoperability foundation that makes applications portable, AI scalable and innovation significantly easier to deliver across heterogeneous manufacturing environments," said John Dyck, CEO, CESMII.

What the 1.0 release delivers

i3X 1.0 is a complete, implementation-ready package: it specifies exactly what compliant systems must support, and provides the tools to build and verify that compliance.

  • Implementation guide: A precise specification defining required and optional behaviors, security and authentication requirements, and architectural guidance for building i3X-compliant systems. Implementers know exactly what they must build.
  • OpenAPI specification: A machine-readable definition of the i3X API, enabling automated tooling, code generation and consistent implementation across platforms.
  • Conformance test suite: An automated testing tool available at i3x.dev/conformance that validates any i3X server implementation against the 1.0 specification, reporting Full 1.0 Compliance, 1.0 Compatible, or Not Compliant. The suite can also be downloaded and run locally for private or internal server validation.
  • Updated i3X Explorer: A live, interactive tool from Ace Technologies for browsing and querying i3X-compliant endpoints, enabling developers and manufacturers to validate and explore implementations in real time.
  • Python client library: An official client library enabling developers to connect to any i3X-compliant server with minimal setup, accelerating application development across the ecosystem.
  • MCP server: an open-source AI-interface, allowing natural language query of an connected i3X server.
  • Updated SDK documentation: Comprehensive documentation for both server implementers and application developers, including a Quickstart guide, FAQ and category-specific developer resources.

Enabling AI at scale across heterogeneous industrial systems

i3X is designed from the ground up to support AI and analytics at scale. Without consistent, contextualized access to operational data across systems, AI in manufacturing remains fragmented and difficult to move beyond isolated pilots. i3X solves this by standardizing how applications discover, access and interact with manufacturing data across any compliant platform.

“i3X provides a structure for surfacing data in a consistent way, helping teams begin to unify their systems, and enabling organizations to scale from isolated pilots to enterprise-wide deployment of AI-driven solutions," said Jonathan Wise, Chief Technology Architect, CESMII.

The i3X core capability set enables applications to discover available namespaces, explore object types and their definitions, retrieve instances, navigate hierarchical and non-hierarchical relationships, query current and historical values, subscribe to changes and events, and update data where permitted. These primitives form the operational foundation for advanced manufacturing use cases, analytics and AI applications.

A Global Ecosystem Behind the Standard The i3X 1.0 specification was developed in collaboration with a working group of manufacturers, system integrators, technology providers and industry leaders. The coalition includes leading cloud platforms, industrial automation providers and innovative industrial software companies, representing a broad cross-section of the manufacturing technology landscape aligned around open, interoperable architectures.

“We see interoperability as a long-term strategic imperative across our complex technology landscape at Georgia-Pacific. We’re excited about how i3X can accelerate innovation and solutioning of our digital/AI transformation strategy at scale," said Anthony Huffman, former VP of IT, Digital Manufacturing, Georgia-Pacific.

Built on CESMII’s Smart Manufacturing imperatives

i3X helps manufacturers implement CESMII’s three Smart Manufacturing Architecture Imperatives: open, standards-based information modeling (SM Profiles), a clear set of requirements for platform and application interoperability (SM Interoperability Platform), and a common API for manufacturing systems, rapid application development and scalable AI deployment. Together, these capabilities form the architectural foundation for interoperable, future-proof manufacturing systems.

By lowering barriers to integration and enabling application portability, i3X is designed to:

  • Accelerate Smart Manufacturing adoption across manufacturers of all sizes
  • Reduce integration cost and architectural complexity in heterogeneous software environments
  • Accelerate deployment of analytics and AI across manufacturing operations and supply chains
  • Empower a broader developer community to build portable manufacturing applications against a common API
  • Strengthen U.S. manufacturing competitiveness through open, scalable digital infrastructure With 44 participating technology providers and a growing ecosystem of manufacturers, developers and integrators, CESMII believes i3X represents more than an interoperability standard — it is the foundation for an open manufacturing application ecosystem where innovation can scale across platforms, facilities, and supply chains.
