Expansion of engineering materials is a common issue, but not much is known about how expansion affects the repeatability of positioning equipment. This white paper discusses and tests that effect.

Most of us are aware that all common engineering materials expand when heated, but many will be surprised at the effect that this expansion can have on the repeatability of precision positioning equipment.

In Part I of this paper, we will explore the theory of how thermal expansion affects the repeatability of linear positioning devices. In Part II, we will present the results of repeatability testing conducted on a typical linear stage, the A-LSQ150B. The results will show the significance of thermal expansion as well as the effectiveness of several strategies for controlling it.
