April 24, 2012 - In August 1987, Engineer Thomas Punzenberger founded Punzenberger in Salzburg with the objective of revolutionizing the automation market with a new piece of software – zenon. COPA-DATA now has ten subsidiaries, cooperates with distributors throughout the world and has zenon customers in more than 50 countries. This success story will be celebrated in 2012 with the release of a new version, zenon 7, a series of events and an anniversary celebration. Seeing a lack of efficiency in production processes and identifying functionality absent in the available software products moved Thomas Punzenberger to found a company and start developing software in 1987.
“I was already convinced at the time that software in the production environment and in energy technology would play an increasingly important role. It is the key to increased efficiency, optimum utilization of resources, secure networks and reliable working processes. My challenge was to develop an easy-to-configure tool, with which users themselves were in a position to make changes,” explains Punzenberger. What started as the idea of a visionary in a sole-trader company quickly developed from conception to a market-ready product. The first version of zenon was launched in 1991 and the first major customers are still customers of COPA-DATA today.
